I need help quickly, I only have low res files left after a fire and need to know if there is any software available to help me get a 6x8 or even 8x10 from a 500-700k file!?!? Or is there any way of doing it in Photoshop??
Any help much appreciated, cheers , Brett.

You don't give the important information, which is the size of the images in pixels. (The file size is meaningless unless you say whether it is tiff, jpeg, compressed, uncompressed etc). You can easily upsize the images in Photoshop using Image->Image Size. Just check the "Constrain Proportions" and "Resample Image" boxes, set the resolution to 240ppi and the width or height (in cm or ins) to what you want. The other dimension will be automatically adjusted. After you have resized, apply a little sharpening to the image. If you are making a big change in the image size, some claim that upsizing in small steps helps avoid "jaggies" (zig-zag diagonal edges). You can upsize in steps of 10%, say.

Hi John, thanks for your response. The images is roughly, 900x599 pixels at 150dpi, j-peg. I have tried increasing in increments of 10% each time but just gets worse over 5x7. Do you think I could get round it this way, I can probably get a decent 6x4 out of these files. If I do that get them scanned, high res and then take a print from that, surely it will be better than the results I am getting now?!?
Cheers Brett. :?

A lot does depend on the quality of the images. You can get reasonable (if not wonderful) prints from excellent 900x600 images. If Photoshop doesn't do the job, then you might try downloading a copy of Qimage, which claims to work wonders with its vector resampling algorithms.

Alas, there is no Mac version of Qimage, though it can be run under Mac Virtual PC v5.02 on OS X.

Anything is possible... If you can afford it, or can rent/borrow/lease it check out pure fractals which is a plug in for photoshop http://www.adobe.com/products/plugins/photoshop/genfrac.html It's regarded as the 'best' way to enlarge images.

You may also acheive good results by 'hiding' the jaggies in some art type filter... Make the picture a painting instead of a photo...

There is also a program available online for making large upsamples.
I have never used it, but check it out at www.interpolatethis.com

See this thread over on the DPReview site http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1003&message=7485725 which gave the results from a test of various interpolation methods.
