This is a really amateurish bone headed question. What is fill-in flash? Is there a setting for fill-in flash or is it more of a technique? Thanks!

Fill flash is a technique generally used to reduce facial shadows on a subject or just properly expose a subject while maintaining ambient light in the remainder of an image. You are filling in the light. There is no direct fill flash setting but the flash exposure compensation or FEC allows you to adjust the flash power toa accomplish a balanced image. And your 550EX is capable of FEC.
