Well this should get me started.

I ordered the AB800 strobe (http://www.alienbees.com/b800.html) (Black) with the AB Wireless transmitter and receiver (http://www.alienbees.com/rft1.html), and a 48" silver/white umbrella (http://www.alienbees.com/usw.html).

I also ordered (from B&H) the Sekonic L-358 light meter (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=8146&A=details&Q=&sku=221078&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation) (advertised $259. Once added to your cart becomes $239. Not sure how long this lasts) and since I saw the post about free gels for a flash I also grabbed the Roscolux Swatchbook (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=45189&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) for a penny ($ .01)

With a name like "TRM Design", and all those forum posts leading up to this purchase and you settle for something as pedestrian as "(Black)". When you could have had "Martian Pink" or "Alien Green".

Go figure?

Enjoy! Lon

Hey Lon,

Well it's TMR Design, not TRM...minor detail...loloolol
Sorry to disappoint with the color..For me it was a choice of white or black. I like color but I'm not a neon kind of guy.
At least you only had a comment about the color and not what I actually purchased..LOLOL

Just curious. How were you going to fire the strobes to get a meter reading with the L-358? Does the AB Tx/Rx set come with a handheld Tx unit?

So you are a "a wiring guy" and "not a neon kind of guy".

You persona is slowly starting to be revealed.

Wow. Are you the same TMR Design with a thread that I replied to a week ago, asking about whether to buy a white or silver 20 dollar umbrella?

And you ended up buying real studio strobes, light meters and wireless transmitters.

Another victim of the gear buying spree that happens to infect people around here... (including myself). ;)

Guilty as charged olz.... the multiple 580EX's and ST-E2 idea is no longer thw gameplan.

In the same way that I would have split a sync cord to go from camera and meter to strobe, I'm now going to split (or really merge) the out put of the wireless receiver and the sync cord from the meter into the strobe.

The answer is yes. Both the old RR1s and the newer RTF1s can be triggered via a sync cord. I have the RR1s and looked up the RTF1s answer to that very question yesterday.

A white/sliver umbrella, I would have went with the "Martian Pink" or "Alien Yellow". What color is that Sekonic L-358?

Want some paint recommendations? Say atonement.

I think the Alien Bee units are principally molded ABS or polycarbonate, both paint up really keen. Hey, how about some flames decals or that agitated looking woodpecker smoking a cigar?

Enjoy! Lon

No agitated woodpecker smoking a cigar decal?

I gave one of those woodpecker decals to a friend for his very beautiful handmade cherry and birch 4 X 5 field camera (he made it himself). I am not sure if he put it on the camera or not.

Enjoy! Lon

I cant stand any of the other colors... Black is the only color I could get. I keep seeing Pink and Green ones on ebay, and i JUST CANT bid on them... IMO I dont think it looks very profesional.

Grats on your purchase.. My first AB purchase I also picked up a L-358 & AB800

I think those "agitated looking woodpecker smoking a cigar" decals look professional on camera gear.

You can never be too concerned about looking professional.

I got all my "agitated looking woodpecker smoking a cigar" decals on ebay, have you bid on any?

I think if I could get one reaaaall cheap from ebay. I would first see if I could paint the thing. Not into neon, but if the thing can be painted and I got it for cheap, I'd spend an hour with a roll of painter's tape covering up important areas and I'd paint it fire engine red with some Krylon!

I have a Sekonic meter I purchased 10 years ago. I asked a question from a forum member regarding lighting and one of the replies was "do you have a light meter?" So glad I kept the light meter. I usually use the built in meter, but the hand held has it's uses. I think I'll go put it in my bag now.

You guys are really into the color thing. I'm by no means a boring person but I like all the gear in black. Its sleek, clean looking, very professional (not like I am really concerned with it but aesthetically it 'feels' pro, whereas Pink or Green looks like something I got from Toys R Us) and it matches most everything else.

No, I'm convinced the "agitated looking woodpecker smoking a cigar" look is a lot more professional.

All scientific studies cited in "Looking (but not actually being) Professional Magazine" all bear this out. The competing magazine "The Illusion of Professionalism" also cite the same studies.

And since the "agitated looking woodpecker smoking a cigar" decals are inexpensive and come in a variety of sizes, it is no hardship to put them on all you gear, large or small, so any equipment matching problems evaporate.
