Still trying to become better. Thanks for your earlier replies. What about this one? Can anyone tell me where I can get some information on the "rule of thirds"?

hummm too much flash...Just my preference here but I use available light whenever possible.

I find myself wondering what she is looking at...

You'll get better...keep practicing. :)

what were the settings? a larger f number might have helped tone down the light a bit. focus looks nice, its pretty sharp.. what mode were you in? for flash, try it in manual mode around 1/250 for a starting point on the shutter speed and f11.. the rule of thirds is just a suggestion, theres no concrete rules.. although some will say differently.. but if we all thought of that, all our shots would look the same! I think its a cute shot, better to have her looking off to the longer side of the frame than at the shorter side,,

Zacker.

You are the greatest! Thanks for taking the time to reply. This was shot in p mode 1/60, f 5.0, 38mm. The only reason I know that is that I look at it after the fact. I wish I had the skills to look at a subject and say ("ok, this needs to be shot in m mode, f stop...etc...") I am sooo confused about aperture and shutter speed. Can you point me in the right direction?

Ashley,

Thanks for the reply. She was just looking.... I had a hard time keeping her still.

I like this pose a lot more than the other. Here is a link I got quickly off the net on composition and rule of thirds. I made my own Photoshop .psd composition grid I can put over images for cropping.

Cute child and OK pose but it's a bit washed for my liking. Too much light.

I would suggest moving off of P - mode. Try AV at 2.5 with ISO of 400 or 800 to get shutter speed to around 1/125. 2.5 is great for portraits to seperate subject/background. If you need to use flash move to M with settings of ISO 800 or 400, shutter speed 1/125, AV of 2.5, and flash on Auto/ H-sync (point flash at 75 degree angle up or straight up with catchlight card pulled up).

PS: The image can be fixed in PhotoShop as well. Turn your "image editing" on and we can give you examples of thirds and corrected exposure.

Cropping in adobe lightroom beta 4 .1 gives you the rule of thirds automatically. Hope you don't mind I tested it in lightroom.

danielvassel,

I just bought this book because several posters had suggested it. I just started reading it but it looks like it will help re-educate me about understanding exposure.

The image is a little blown but by using layers in photoshop this can be corrected. Now as for the rule of thirds, think of your view finder as a 9 square grid and by in visioning four equally spaced lines intersecting two vertical lines and two horizontal line (like a checker board) you use the points at which the lines cross to compose your shots as well as using the lines to give more forground or less forground, you also use the lines them selves as points of reference for focusingon the subjects eyes or body lines etc. . Here are examples of how your image relates to thirds as you shot it and as I would have cropped it.

http://www.silverlight.co.uk/tutorials/compose_expose/thirds.html This link gives the basics of the Rule of thirds.
