Dear ALL,

Can someone please explain what the best method for cleaning a lens is?

What tools do I need, can I use normal sun glass cleaning spray and cloth? etc etc.

Thank in advance.

Shafiq

At nearly every photo shop that I have ever seen, they sell a small lens cleaning kit for $8-10.

It consists of a small 2-ounce bottle of lens cleaner solution, one small camel-hair blower brush, and one small microfiber cloth or else lint-free cloth.

First, you brush off the dust using the blower brush, then you drop one drop of solution on the cloth and wipe it around the lens until it is clean.

Do not use an ordinary cloth unless it is lint-free and very soft.

something i find convenient to have in my kit bag is a "lens pen" one end is a brush to sweep away dust and the other end is a felt pad of sorts that is used to "write over" the smears on the lens. its small and fits well into my travellng kit bag......and thus far it seems to work well and not damage the filters/lens.

i think they are dishwasher friendly :D be sure to use the non-spotting
rinse. just kidding, use a lens pen (be gentle).

I have one of those pens. It works great. I also have a micro-fiber lens cloth, but I've only been using the pen because it works so well.

I just put mine in the dishwasher. (Don't use the "pot scrubber mode.)

Do that only if you have the waterproof 'L' lenses...

I use the Opticlean liquid

you paint it on lens let it dry to a plastic flim then peel it off, it gets is optically clean, takes and bit of practice but it leaves it perfectly clean.

I like it, but not for everyone as its a bit fiddly.

for in the field I use a hama bulb blower and microfibre cloth.

I tood your advice and washed it with the spot free, Should I have left in on normal cycle instead of Pots and Pans? I have to go reasemble it so I can send it to Canon for warranty work.

Be careful with normal sun glass cleaning spray!

Your lenses have a coating to prevent unwanted reflections etc., if you use the wrong cleaning liquid you could be washing the coating off, which degrades the performance of the lens. Just go to a photography store and get a lens cleaning kit.

I just use a blower and a microfiber cleaning cloth. Unless you get a finger print or some other oil based substance on the lens, there's no need for lens cleaning solution.
