I have the 100mm-400mm f/4.5-56 IS and would like to upgrade to the f/4 version. Will Canon make an f/4 version to the 100mm-400mm lens? If so, when will this lens hit the market?

I think it rather unlikely it'd come about any time soon, and if it does, I'd expect street price to be in the $2000 area.

And it would weigh in at about 6 pounds!

A 100-400 2.8 would be freaking insane...wow just thinking of the price sends shivers down my spine.

According to the rumors on www.northlight-images.co.uk, the price of the Canon EF 100-400 L IS(3) USM is going to be about 1200 EUROS. Is there any chance that it might be so cheap (if it is going to be made at all). I'd be happy if the price would even be somewhere near 2000 euros, but I ain't even sure about that.

If a 100-400 f/4 IS lens is introduced by Canon, it won't be nearly that cheap. 400 mm and f/4 equals an input lens diameter of at least 100 mm. The lens, if it uses Canon's DO glass will be at least as big as the 400 mm f/4 DO lens, and probably bigger. Big glass = big money.
Now, a replacement for the present 100-400 f/4-5.6 IS lens could approach the published "rumour" price, but I don't know if Canon will want to replace that lens or not.

The recent update of the 70-200 F/4 with IS may hint at an update. I would guess the update would be a revision of the IS to the three stop version in the 70-200 F/4. Basically the same lens just a revised IS. An F/4 would be nice but hellishly expensive and heavy.

Just something to add to the rumour...

Look at the price!
2498 EUR = 1685GBP = 3292 USD = 4185 AUD - rather expensive addition to the kit bag.

Who in their right mind would spend that much on it. Ridiculous price, then again most likely bs.

I don't think that is such a high price for that lens. Look at the price of the Nikon 200-400. I sure hope this price will be true and the lens will come out this spring.

Rediculously low for what would be a rather large lens. Think 300/2.8 and 400/4 DO and you'll have an idea as to the size. This would be big glass.

It would be too big

It would be big, heavy and expensive. It would have similar size and weight characteristics to the Nikon 200-400mm f/4 VR. Not a replacement for today's 100-400 at all, much more an entirely new member of the family.

Agreed on all points. But nevertheless it would be very desirable (to me anyway!). A lens like this (assuming the optical quality was up there with the best of them) that also performed well with a 1.4x TC would be some kind of dream come true for me! :D
