I've taken advantage of a good price on the 580EX combined with a £35 cashback voucher to splurge and get this flash - it's been much on my mind for a while, and though I have a perfectly serviceable 380EX, was keen to access some of the more sophisticated controls the 580EX has. I decided that as I could get such a good deal - basically a third off the high street price if the cashback is included, the extra money to get a 580 over a 430 was not that much extra, so I went for the big boy. the 380 will still be of use on my film camera ( the original user anyway) as my Type B 35mm Eos cannot really make use of many of the 580's features.

It arrived this morning and I have had a bit of a play with it, but a more serious work-out will have to wait a while. I'm really impressed with the build quality, though the door to the battery compartment is a bit stiff and needs careful jiggling about to get it properly open. I get the feeling that, if forced, something would break....

This flash is a fair bit heavier than I was expecting, and my 20D with 17-40 and 580EX has become quite a beast.

what I'm most looking forward to is being able to play with fill flash / exposure comp, as well as some of the more interesting features like strobe and high speed synch - my old flash had no manual settings at all.

So I'm really pleased with the purchase and looking forward to making good use of the features.

Don't worry about the stiff battery door. That's normal.

When I got mine I thought I was going to break the door off. The way they made the hinge is a bit odd and does not make you feel you're doing the right thing when you open the battery door.
It's a great flash...definitely a bit heavier than I anticipated but I've already gotten used to it. I can see where a grip would come in when using the flash on camera to balance it a bit.

I got mine before I got another lens. I don't see how people can shoot without one. (or something comparable).

The door has a definate sequence of operation.

Open: Slide and lift.
Close: Close and slide

www.cameras2u.com (http://www.cameras2u.com) with voucher code cm2u-pr06 £261 with free next working day delivery. and they were as good as their word!

With the £35 voucher this makes pretty much 1/3 off the Jessops price, and even makes Warehouse Express look bad.
