View Full Version : What lens is this?

I was on the north shore of Oahu last week shooting some surfing shots. The waves weren't too good so I started looking up and down the beach and saw this woman shooting with a Canon L lens. I zoomed in with my 100-400 to check out what lens it is but I still can't tell. It looks like a 70-200 but the lens mount looks different. I know it is not a 100-400. Also, I can't tell what camera it is because there is no logo on the right side(from the front). What canon camera is all black and has no logo on the right side? Is this stuff from overseas?

I would have walked down and asked her, but I'm on crutches and that would have been a long way to hop in the sand.

Two different shots and then 100% crops.

Yah...I'm bored...

Thanks.

Looks like 20 or 30d with 70-200 IS w/out the tripod collar.

70-200 IS. Could be any camera with the label removed, although resembles the 10/20/30D.

I can see the camera's logo... The 10D has it on the left side...

70-200 IS, Iagree. And the 10D had the model name on the RH side, which this appears to also, so I'll go with a 10D.

Better yet - what filter is that? :D

Such an amateur - no lenshood.

Looks like a polarizer lens.

VFTT

Ah....right you are...10D.

As for the filter, I'm guessing it is a polarizer and that is why the hood is off - so she can rotate the filter.

So f 2.8 or f4? The mount still looks wierd to me - it is missing the serrated finger grip section right at the camera end.

definitly a 10D with a 70-200 2.8 IS without the tripod collar and hood

Jon

2.8. They're quite different. I think the angle the light's coming in from may be helping hide the texture you're looking for.

Good point on the polarizer, though. I can almost usually reach in from the front and spin mine with a fingertip, but it's much easier on the 24-70.

The 70-200 IS is a max f/2.8 lens

So f 2.8 or f4?

It's F2.8, IS. The focus ring and the zoom ring are the same size.

Here is a picture from the digital picture showing the difference:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Images/Other/Canon-70-200-Size-Comparison.jpg

The F4 is in the middle and the F2.8 (IS) is on the right.

Also, It looks like she is using a polarizing filter.

No - Canon just released an f/4 IS version.

It's not the F4 version because the rubber rings are the same size as on the f2.8 versions.

I need to get a 600mm so lens identification will be easier...

Again, the rubber rings are the same size on the 2.8 version and not on the f/4 version.

the lens is WAY to big to be the F4. also the F4 doenst have the little screws under the tripod mount area, this lens does, this lens IS the 70-200 2.8L IS

Look at the dial on the right side. It is a Rebel XT or XTi.... and a 70-200 IS

Rebels do not have the dial on that side of the camera.

The lens looks very much like my 70-200 f/2.8L IS, but the rings around the lens at the camera end are different from my copy. Mine is precisely like the one in the photo (Andrew's post #14 above). There are some significant differences between the zoom ring and the camera body between mine and the one she is using. Could it be an old model?

Billginthekeys
29th of November 2006 (Wed), 17:23
there is no old model. the light is playing tricks on you because that IS IS IS IS IS a 70-200 2.8L IS, and nothing else.

My lens (and the one in post#14) have a straight line next to the selected focal length value.

Another significant difference is the serrated ring just in front of the mount. Mine is identical to the picture in post#14, but the one on the beach is very different in that area.

Does anybody else see the differences? Basically it's between the "zoom" control ring and the camera mount where I see differences. Everything else looks identical to my 70-200 f/2.8L IS.

liike i said, light is playing tricks on you. remember the tripod ring is off, meaning those little studs are sticking out. that "triangle" isnt a triangle, its the shadows from one of the metal studs. and the ring, once again, the tripod ring is off, so thats probably whats making the difference.

Is that a dial on top on the left side of the camera? Looks to me to be 70-200 IS lens with the CP on the front

Definitely the big IS. The 'bore' of the f/4 is much smaller and that would show in proportion to her camera and hands (and she can't have huge hands because they'd show vs the camera).

You know you are a photographer when you get a chance to snap a pic of a chick and check out her L..... ;)

Yup, and only in the Lens Forum, where we could grab a beer, and talk all day about 5% of the whole pictures.

Nice shot, BTW :)

OK, enough arguing!

It IS a Canon EOS 10D with a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens attached and that has a B+W Circular Polariser. Very easy to see. :)

If I was going to the beach and I had wind and sand coming at me and I looked at the gear I have, what would I take? Well, I don't have the 70-200 IS, but I have the f4 and a CP filter and a 10D. I think I would avoid taking my 20D or 5D, but the 10D would be great. So, I think the filter will protect the lens and I'd snap away too. Nice choice for the photographer. I'd do the same.

I have other shots from that day that I think would make most guys here drool a little more... ;)

Like I said, the waves weren't great that day so I had to focus on other scenery. :D

Because of the viewing screen on the back.

Not sure I see a viewing screen... I see some reflections, but it could be anything.
