I couldnt help myself with that subject title

First things first, thanks to everyone who has answered my previous posts, you all have been such a great help!!! Hopefully I will be able to return the favor in the future.

Ok here is the situation.

I have a 17-40/4L which as you know takes a 77mm filter.

I have on order a 70-200/4 which takes a 67mm filter, Will anything negative happen if i use a step up ring for my circ. polarizer?

I've often wondered about this...
Can you still use the lens hood that comes with the lens?

If the step-up ring is just for the polariser then you will be OK.
As to the hood still fitting - try it a see: I don't have that combinaton to experiment with.

Maybe you'd have to use an additional step-down ring from the filter to mount the lens hood.

This is bound to look weird....

Does the 17-40 have a lens hood you can use on the 77 mm filter?

Andy

The hood won't mount on the threads,, so that isn't a concern,. if you just get the 77mm filter first,. you will be able to see of it wil fit inside the diameter of the 70-200mm f/4's lens hood... if it is not too large a diameter to fit within the lens hood,. then I would certainly see no reason not to get a step up ring.

Lastly,. using a larger filter is indeed just fine.. and in fact with the 10D/Rebels 1.6X crop factor there is a significant amount of freedom available to use SMALLER filters as well... lots of people using 72mm filters on 77mm lenses for example... but i'd be carefull whith the wider angle lenses like the 17-40mm

//feeling very lucky that my three most used lenses are all 77mm...
