I suspect some will think this a bit dark but I wanted it "moody," with a lot of contrast.

I like it, very good choice for b+w because it emphasises the detail in the walls, and the homeless(?) person is perfectly placed.

It's great the way it looks. Excelent use of the curve and the person sitting there balances the whole picture. Great job.

Well done. I wouldn't change a thing.

Awesome shot. The person sitting adds a great deal to it and I think that this wouldn't have the same effect in color.

The subject matter is awesome and it is a moving picture.

You wanted critique though right?

I think it is a little dark, as you do. I cut the top inch and the left inch off and adjusted the histogram to make it lighter with less contrast, like you chose not to do and I liked it more. Too much of the picture is irrelevant because of the blacks and the whites are too white.

That is how an amateur critiques.

I wish I had taken it.

I think that it's fine as it is but the picture being "a little dark" isn't what gives it or necessarily enhances the mood of the shot. Brighter for me might make more of the detail and emphasise the relationship between the subject (sitting guy) and environment (tunnel).

Like I say, wish I had taken it!

The subject is quite moody, (sitting hunched up, and looking away) while the area is vibrant and contrasty. The 'skinny' feeling of the beams and mesh work great.

I do think the shot is too bright (for example: the hat is overexposed), not too dark.

Wow Wow Wow and more Wow. Excellent!

What equipment did you use for this shot? Tripod?

Excellent
I like it as it is - it takes you straight into the picture (from dark to light)

Great work

I think that we need to open a new board titled "Just Too Damned Good", that way MY shots wont seem quite *so* common when looked at after viewing this.

With my compliments, and (I must admit) my envy.

Thanks all for replies. I thought most people would not like this shot--too bleak, maybe. I worked on the pic a little to make it somewhat less contrasty. This one shows a little more middle-range detail. The hat and the lights aren't so blown out. The second is brighter while at the same time less contrasty than the original.

Not sure which one I like better.

Yarin: I did use a tripod on this shot, it was a long exposure because I needed good depth of field. I think it was between 5 to 8 secs at f11 or 13, ISO 100, with a Drebel.

Same tunnel, different view, same figure before he sat down. Not quite as interesting to me.

Actually, I quite like this shot at least as much as the other... it has a wonderful symmetry.

Stop it now Boojum - one great shot in a thread is enough but two, that's just plain greedy! I like your editing in the first shot (although I like them all) of the second post of the edited original (did that make sense?). The next shot is fabulous. I wanna find that tunnel! Oh, and the B&W work is terrific.

Well done!

Please whatever you do DO NOT CROP IT LIKE IJOHNSON SAYS!!
this is a phenominal photograph...you should stick to it...the point of black and white as you know, is to have a good range of black to white and all the middle greys....you have it all my man
keep doin what you do!

I like both of the shots - the curve in the first one combines with the mesh from the sides of the tunnel and stiking clarity give it a great depth of field - makes it look three-dimensional. Of the edited photos I like the first one because it seems a little warmer and not as stark - creates a nice feeling of contrast between the image and the emotional response. I also like the shot straight down the tunnel - nice simmetry and the natural curve of the bridge makes me wonder what is over the hill so to speak.

Few photos cause me to exclaim "wow" out loud... this one did! Good job and great for your portfolio! As for critique, I like your original the best, perhaps with maybe just a few pixels cropped off the left of the image.

Awesome shot!! :)
