Second curtain synchronization is not available on the Digital Rebel.
However, I've read that you can set second curtain sync on an external
flash, such as the 550EX. Is this true, and would it work on the DRebel? Thanks for your replies.

Yes.

Yep.

Plus, the 550EX gives you back all kinds of other things you might find important, like FEC, a near-IR assist lamp (and the ability to use the assist lamp only in no-flash allowed situations, by setting the 550EX to TTL mode), FP sync, manual control, modeling flash, wireless master for multiple flashes, etc., etc.

I have one, and I'm quite happy with my decision to go for it, rather than the more inexpensive 420EX, which leaves most (all?) of this stuff out, depending on the camera to provide (which the 300D doesn't).

But what about E-TTL? I've a 10D and a 420EX, ok, the 420 is'nt able to make second curtain sync by himself. but I can do this by custom functions. But because its E-TTL the flash will fire a preflash lets say on the first curtain. so, I cant find a solution for that... anybody knows one?

best regards
Peter

The E-TTL preflash is always before the first curtain opens, so there is no exposure due to the preflash. In regular 1st curtain mode the main flash immediately follows the preflash after the first curtain opens. It happens so quick many people only see one flash.

In 2nd curtain mode the main flash is just before the second curtain moves, so if the shutter speed is fairly long the you'll definately see both flashes.
