where do you position the lights

ive heard a lot about main, fill abd back light, can some one explain these or point me in a direction to read about them, hate to sound stupid, but i have just been putting lights to the right and to the left of the subjext, where does the back light go, whats a hair light, stupid me sorry to sound so new can some one explain
