Can anyone give me some advice in macro extension tubes? Do these provide a good macro image? It seems to me that, since there is no glass, there's no way they could hurt the image quality of the lens used, but before I waste any money on them, I'd like to hear from others that have used them.

Thanks :?:

The Kenko tubes are a good value, appx $120US for a set of 3, 68mm total.

I've had good results with the tubes and a 50mm prime.

They are also useful for allowing longer zoom lenses to focus closer.

Here's some samples...

Right now, I only have the 12 mm Kenko tube. As an experiment, I compared two shots, one without the tube and one with the tube.

Without the tube, this is as close as I could get with my 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 lens:

With the tube, I got in much closer, and enjoyed a much tighter depth-of-field as well:

With longer tubes, you can expect to get in even tighter.

Oh, if you do use the tubes, you will sometimes have trouble with AF, and will have to focus manually. That's ok since the focus verification still works.
