I wanted to blend some pictures together using photoshop cs2.
so i just followed the basic steps, adding a layer mask, and using the gradient tool and i got this.

It really depends on how you did it. If you can post a link to a layered psd file for people to download we might be able to tell you how to improve it.

Are they taken in the same room, same camera set-up? if so layer the images as you have done then erase the extra that you don't want . As long as the camera didn't move during the shots it should look great.

Since the background in all the layers are the same, you can just cut out a "hole" (you can use masking, too) in all the layers above any area where there's a person so that the person can be seen through the hole. You'll need to do this for each image of the person which has a layer above it. There's really no need to adjust the opacity of the layers (or use a gradient tool) like you did except when actually doing the edit. But when you get done, you should set the opacity back to 100%.

Or, you can just cut out the different parts of the different images and "collage" them together.
