I was planning to buy an S40, but they are out of stock and two salesman said it is being discontinued. Does anyone know if there is a new improved model coming out, or is it just going away (then I must search harder)? Thanks.

To my knowledge the S40 isn't being discontinued it's just that it isn't selling like the S30 is and many stores have decided not to stock up on any more of them. The camera is still wildly popular--but not in discount stores. Circuit City will stop carrying it in their stores--but they will keep it available for purchase on the web.

Ritz Camera has them. I'm in MI and we prob have about 5 of them in stock. I'm sure we have lots and lots in the warehouses.
The s40 is $200 more then the s30, only a .8mp difference, and the s30 can go up to iso 800 because the s30 has less noise. and the s30 can shoot at 3fps whereas the s40 is 2.25fps.
I don't believe there is a replacement for it, but like the other fellow said, camera stores are going to stock what sells the best.
For $100 more you could get the G2 (now in black finish) that has a 100% brighter lens, 100% longer lasting battery, and a hotshoe, and swivel screen. COOL!

Hey
These cameras are evolving fast so expect to see them being replaced with newer models. The S40 is still on the shelves. It is, in my view, the best digital on the market in its category. It also has an option for a waterproof case at a reasonable price. If you opt for this make sure you have some insurance cover that does not exclude water damage in the small print. In fact, make sure you have that cover all year round. Canon specifically exclude water damage in their warranty! I know. Luckily I was covered by my household all risks insurance.
