View Full Version : G7 ridiculous shutter lag with external flash?

Anybody else noticing a ridiculously slow shutter lag when using the G7 with an external flash?
When I use the on-board flash, the shutter lag is decent enough, but as soon as I put my 420EX on it, it becomes brutal.
Forget about taking pictures of your kids with it.
Anybody else or is there something wrong with my G7?

Doesnt' matter what mode I use. P mode, AV, TV or manual.

It can... if you use AV indoors its acting as a fill flash, which could make it look like shutter lag.

Actually AV mode works much different with the G7 than it does with my 20D/30D. With the 20D/30D, you are right, it does work as fill flash. The G7 doesn't work that way.
It doesn't matter what settings I have the camera set to, or what mode, I get a consitently LONG shutter lag when using external flash with the G7.
Can anybody with a G7 confirm this?

I have just checked my G7 with my 430EX. Yes, there is more shutter lag than with daylight photography, but no difference between the inbuilt flash and the 430EX. I guessed the delay might be due to the IS working, so I turned it off, and the shutter lag does decrease, but not completely back to normal. It doesn't seem "ridiculous" though.

The shutter lag is due to E-TTL metering, Its not "that" bad! lol
It's about 1/2 sec

I guess I am used to my 20D/30D cameras

Does the G7 has a "normal" shutterlag when you use it without a flash,
let's say outside on a normal/sunny day? Or is it still slow like other P&S?
Or is it faster than the G6?
Thank you ...

Yes, I have noticed it - it is the same whether I use internal or external (580EX) flash, it has nothing to do with ETTL metering as the delay is BEFORE the ETTL pre-flash, and it seems to happen in all modes - at least, I have not found a way to avoid it yet. Even setting the external flash to manual mode does not avoid the delay.
As far as I am concerned this has to be a bug in the firmware, and it makes the camera virtually useless for 'social snapshot' use with flash, since you generally miss the action you were trying to photograph. Which is a bit of a shame really as the auto-face-focus stuff should have made this camera perfect for that sort of thing.
If anyone knows of any setting or combination of settings that avoids this problem I'd be interested to hear them. Otherwise I'll just have to hope that Canon realizes there is a problem here and fixes the firmware.

From the DPReview of the G7:
"One thing worth noting is that the shutter lag when using flash (because of the pre-flash metering) increases to around half a second. On a more positive note you can use the flash in continuous (burst) mode."

It's no better/worse than on the G6, I find this to be an annoyance - you simply need to learn how to anticipate, a bit, before you press the shutter release..........Take a lot of shots to make sure.

Flash shutter release delay has been the sole disappointment for me. While registering the G7 for its warranty, I took the opportunity to ask whether a firmware fix is on the way. Sorry and no are the gist of their response. If you, too, are less than pleased, perhaps a chorus will get Canon's attention. Yours, Cameron

Shutter lag is poor on G7. My workaround during portraits is to say one, two .. then depress the shutter so that the camera fires on "three."
