Ok eviscerate me, I can take it , I need all the help I can get.
I am very new to photography other than simple vacation shots etc. Now with the digital I am able to shoot more and learn.

Personally I think It is a very good shot, I like something with a bit of Humour! Flash may have made the sign stand out better..but that is nit picking.Be more confident in your obvious talent is My advice!

Also I like this shot. The glimmering in the snow/ice is wonderful.
I would however try to lighten up the sign. Since the shot is already taken, you'd have to try to do that in your photo editing software. Try the double exposure blending trick. Copy the picture to a new layer, ligthen the copy such that the sign is well exposed and then blend the two layers, as explained in e.g. http://luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/digital-blending.shtml.

I have to agree with the others...This is an excellent shot. As everyone else has mentioned, the sign needs to be brought out more, but otherwise a beautiful shot! Great Job!

Almost more of a question instead of a suggestion:

The sun just off to the right creates an effect, but would it be better composition if you pointed the camera to the left, thus extending the shadow. Would that lead your eye to the sign---which is the focal point of the shot?

And my first impression is that flash fill should have been used or lightening post pocessing would work too.

Thanks for the tips everyone. :-) I will try to fix the sign in software and see if it works.

I entered another photo in the contest over this one both taken the same day.

Somehow this never invoked danger to me but more humour and irony, thats why I chose another over it.

This week I leave for a road trip through the Rocky Mountains to British Columbia's Vancouver Island so the software touchoups will have to wait.

Cheers all,

Cheers all,

Well, the contest is supposed to be anonymous, but I think pretty much everyone will be able to spot your other one off the bat... oh well.

You are entitled to submit two entries, so I guess you could still submit this one as well.
