Battery life

The battery in my G3 seems to last forever, maybe 400 shots or so.
The last few times I've used my 10D fully charged as per manual instructions I get maybe 100 shots max before the low battery indicator comes on. Admittedly the temperature has been about 25F but I keep the 10D inside my jacket, so the battery is cool but certainly not cold. I'm thinking I will send the battery in to Canon (90 day warranty on batteries)
What kind of battery life are you guys getting with your 10D?

I think you might be better served posting this question on the G-series board. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=33 Although we use the same batteries, the power consumption is very different in an SLR than in a G3. I've had two G2s and a G5, but I've never tried to take 400 pictures in one day with any of them, although it certainly seems that you should be able to get more than 100, cold weather notwithstanding.

At normal tempratures,. you should get 350-450 shots on a single BP511 with the 10D.

Are you by any chance using an IS lens.. teh Gyroscope will put extra strain on the battery.

Also,. as you say,. temperature lays a huge part on battery life.

Lastly,. when the low battery icon comes on I usually get easily another 50-100 shots... If yet to have a battery "die" out right.

Try running the battery down as far as you dare.. and then let it stay in the recharger for as long as over night. See if that helps.

I have not yet drained my batteries completely, even in the winther time I can easily take 200-300 pictures without the battery icon changing status on my 10D

Yes the question relates to battery life in the 10D. The reference to the G3 was simply as a benchmark.
The lens I use 90% of the time is the 70-200 f4 which shouldn't put too much strain on the battery.

If you want to increase your battery time, B&H photo handles replacement for the Canon BP511 which is rated at 1100 mAH. The replacement is rated at 1500 mAH.. This over 1/3 more powerful... Try it you will like it!

Regardless of JZaun recomendation,. which I will concur with,. I use PowerEX 1300MHA batteries and they last longer as well being less than 1/2 the cost....

You still have a problme with the Canon battery if you only get 100 shots.

Again,. be sure to try an over long recharge after draining it... if that doesn't fix things then get a new one from Canon

FYI,. I did NOT have this trouble with my 10D battereis,. but the similar lithium batts I use for the S400 seemd to only last about 30-40 shots the fisrt two or three times I used the battery... after using them a few times,. "breaking them in" and letting them charge overnite,. I have now had the same battery in the camera for about 3 weeks!!!!

I'd be very cautious of Li-Ion batteries at *very* good deals (i.e. $11.99). There have been scattered reports of 'bogus' 3rd party Li-Ion batteries exploding in Nokia cellphones, because the required smart chips in the battery packs were either non-existant or defective.

A Li-Ion battery is very dangerous if not charged/discharged properly. As long as it is being 'handled' by a properly-programmed chip in the pack, all is OK. Otherwise, it can self-destruct. For instance, if a Li-Ion cell was allowed to discharge completely (which the chip never allows, by shutting off the pack before this occurs), the chemical reaction in the cell could cause burns or an explosion.

I went from a G3 to a Digital Rebel.
The battery life on my G3 was phenomonal!
The battery life on my Digital Rebel is SUPER phenomenal!

I used to keep my LCD on all the time with my G3, and couldnt believe how long the battery lasted.
Now that I am forced to shoot with the viewfinder on the Digital Rebel, the battery last forever! Well, I spent last weekend at a friend's place, and took alot of pictures. The battery indicator never moved an inch.

I don't know what picture download times are with the 10D, but with the DReb it is really slow. If I have 100 pictures to download it can take over an hour. Factoring in download time the battery life isn't too bad, but if I just looked at how many pictures I took and downloaded it would probably be in the 200 picture range. Just looking at how many pictures I can take without downloading it's probably in the 400 - 600 range depending on if I used the flash a lot or not.

Do yourself a big favor and get a CF reader to transfer files to your PC. Preferably one of the USB2 models. They are cheap and you will wonder why you did it any other way once you use it. I drag and drop a full 1GB CF to my PC in a couple of minutes with a fast CF (SanDiskUltra II) and a USB2 reader (also SanDisk).

I use PhotoRecord to print 4 pictures on a page and bind it into a photo album of the event. So far I have been unable to make PhotoRecord see my pictures unless I download through ZoomBrowser. If there is another way to make PhotoRecord see the pictures, I would be grateful if you could let me know how to do it! Thanks!

I don't use either PhotoRecord or ZoomBrowser, so I can't help you with the software specifics.

Are you downloading/transferring to your PC through the camera via USB connection? If you can download via ZoomBrowser, I must assume that your PC sees the camera as a connected device. Does PhotoRecord see the camera as a connected device?

What format are the images in; JPG or RAW? If RAW, make sure that PhotoRecord will read RAW images.

Photorecord will see any .bmp, .jpeg/jpg, .tif/.tiff, .fpx, .pcd, or .png files in any directory. CRW is not supported.

The procedure is thus:

1. Open Photorecord.

2. Fetch Photos
- change directory as needed via the dialogue box.

3. Select Printer and Album Type

I bought a card reader and it's about 5-10x faster than reading from the Rebel.
I read a review that said by FAR the biggest drain on the Rebel battery is transferring to the PC.
Apparently even transfering a couple photos to your PC directly from the Rebel reduces your battery charge by half.
So, if you normally can get 600 shots from one charge, if you transfer a couple pics to your PC, your total shots will be reduced to about 300.
That may be the trouble for alot of people. Take a few pics, transfer to pc to look at, take a few more, ....
