Hello everybody. So, I have this baby on eos 400d. The problem is the canon zoom browser ex is reporting sometimes that the max focal lenght is about 188mm istead of 200mm. why this loss? Has anybody encounter this problem w/ this lense? Is it defective? I have no such poblems w/ efs 10-22 and 18-55mm. thanks a lot

are you sure it's reporting that as the max and not the actual? if you're almost zoomed all the way but not quite then 188 would make sense.

pretty sure. the zoom is set to 200mm (steady/hanheld) and its reporting 188 or 200.

hmm...could be a dirty contact or the program just reading incorrectly. if that's the only thing wrong I wouldn't really worry about it.

I thought the same thing with my 70-200. It doesn't take much. You might check again.

Had a similar problem with a 100-400L IS I tried, but it was on the lower side; when on 100mm, the EXIF date showed 105mm! I tried two 100-400Ls one on each day, and it seems that they both had this 105mm=100mm problem...

same figure in acdsee's exif data.(188 instead 200)

There is often some slight discrepancy in reported focal length - it probably comes down to slight variations in tolerances and construction. It is totally irrelevant so long as the lens performs.

do you like the results? If so then I'd let it go.

I'd bet a nickel that it's because of the focus element. Canon and Nikon lenses change focal length depending on where they are focused. Shoot a few test shots, making double sure that it is set to 200mm zoom, then shoot with it focused at different points. Read the exif and see what you get.

I'm sorry for upping this thread.
I've also this issue with mine :(
When i read exif, some shots have a 188mm focal lenght but sometimes, 200mm is displayed...

I think it's a mecanic or contact issue...

But i can't see any difference between one shot taken at 188 or 200mm... they are strictly the same.
