Hello,

I currently own a 24-70/2.8 sigma. I've got some mechanical problems with it. I'm thninking about an equivalent : a black one, a quiet one, with a red circle on it :-)
But I really wonder if it's worth the upgrade ??? 1300$ for the canon and 400 $ for the sigma (according to b&h)
Has anyone ever used both ?

Thanks for your inputs,

MikeG

Mike

I have previously owned a Sigma 24-70 (Nikon mount). I have now switched to Canon and have the 24-70 f2.8L

The Canon just blows the Sigma away, both optically and mechanically. The Sigma has very stiff zoom ring and feels plasticy for an EX lens.

The Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX HSM on the other hand is a really good lens, and worth considering for that focal length.

OK, thanks Andy. So you think it's worth the upgrade...
And on top of that, it's really noisy

I used to have a 70-200 sigma. It was a pretty good lens.

By the way, my 70-200 IS canon blows the sigma away ;-)

I was just about ready to buy the 70-200 sigma lens and someone has talked me into buying the 70-200 f4 canon lens instead. They said the canon lens will focus faster and is way more crisp. I then asked him about the extra f-stop and he said he would rather shoot with a higher ISO with the canon. The Canon 2.8 version is just a bit out of my league at the moment. Any comments on this? It will be used for little league baseball, and shots on the Lake (lots of sun and possibly high speed boats).

Mike:
I don't have any experience with the Sigma lens, but I do own the Canon lens in question. It is my default lens---the one that begins and ends the day on my 10D. It is the sharpest lens I own (among the 5 or so L lenses I own), and it is the most useful focal range for me.

I strongly suspect that after you've used yours for a while, you'll feel the same way.

Good luck

Thos.

I like the Sigma f/2.8 70-200mm a lot,. but it does not sound like you will need the extra stop.. so the Canon f/4 may indeed be the better choice.

Re: the original post.. you can find used Canon 28-70mm f/2.8 for about $700.00-$800.00 quite often at Fred Miranda's forums.

Another alternative might be to look at the Tamron 28-75/2.8 XR.

It's in the Sigma's price range, but a very new lens with reported good performance. There's a comparison by J.A. Doorhof somewhere here on the forum.

Andy

I have a 28-70 2.8 Pro SV.

Well built with metal components and seems to focus well. Controls are well thought out.

Only two peeves: The zoom works BACKWARDS from the Canon lens, and it gets heavy after a full day of shooting.

Since I'm haing some fun posting images, heres one from an indoor motocross
