ifurlong: I love the battery grips... Don't like the cameras without them.
pradeep1 & belmondo: Once you go.... Never mind, it's just not worth it...
Taking advantage of getting a new job, I decided to upgrade my back before I dump the budget on serious glass while I could get all of my money out of the Rebel except for the second battery. I threw that one in for "free" to a guy that just wants it really badly... :D
My first impression is that I actually like the way the Rebel feels better. Maybe it's because I've had it longer. Alas, it's going away as I'll be keeping the 10D... I haven't been much deeper than that. I'm still reading up on the 10D to make more of a compairision...

btw, this was me making reference to another saying not really related to the color of a particular camera... I guess it didn't work... I'm not fanning the Black & Silver flames, so to speak...
Now let's get back to more serious stuff, like (for now) I've got two pretty killer DSLRs at my disposal...

True story....(more in the spirit of a confession).
I went looking for a Rebel to buy as a second/backup camera. This was late last year sometime just before Christmas. I was really looking forward to owning one except there were none to be found at the time---anywhere. My local shop came up with another 10D, so I bought that even though it seemed kinda' silly, and complete overkill.
They're pretty easy to tell apart. The older one has the battery grip, and the new one is bare bottomed. I've found that using the grip really gives the camera a much more substantial feel, and the balance is much improved with the heavier lenses.

I was thinking of a Rebel as a backup/second body.. I had this Idea of hanging out in the talk beach grass with the 10D mounted to my 500mm on the tripod,. and a Drebel in my hands with the 70-200mm mounted....
Would do it but,..
I'm hoping to make the 10D my "backup" soon if you know what I mean :D

All I know is that looking at that photo makes me want to try my hands on a grip for my DRebel to see how it feels. Hell I already have two batteries anyhow. But I want to test it before I buy it.

The Grip makes a world of difference. If you ever shoot portrait at all, your first shot will sell the grip on it's own... Otherwise, it's much better balanced and just plain easier to hold on to.. :D

I know this should be in the rumor thread, but it's too important not to share. I've heard the 1D mkII is actually going to be silver. They're hoping to stimulate 1Ds sales.

One more minor thing about the grip, and I know that I am in the minority on this one but, I like the contrast in colors with the silver and black. Like I said, it's just me.

Sure... even though I'd be out the cost of the lens, think about all the medical expenses I'll save by avoiding hernia surgeries! :o
Um... these things are supposed to come with caddies aren't they? Canon doesn't really expect you to carry these things around do they?

I just came back from lunch where I spent a few minutes at our only real camera store on Oahu. (I wish I could "Buy more Hawaii" but unfortunately their prices are hard to swallow, and I'm only here for a bit more than a year so after-the-sell service doesn't justify the price difference--but I digress.)
Anyway, while I was there I hefted the 70-200L glass in both the f4 and f2.8IS versions--could not believe the difference. I'm in pretty good shape, but the 2.8IS version would even wear me out carrying around. Now I know why it needs that big tripod mounting ring. Also not sure if 1 f-stop and IS (I think you'd need it on a tripod anyway unless you're the Governor of California) are worth the $1,000 plus cost differential.
Since this thread starting comparing the 2 popular Canon DSLRs, I must also point out that I'd be leary of putting the 2.8IS version on the Rebel unless its body strength is substantially more than its film version cousins.

That's the reason that the tripod mount is on the lens. With the larger lenses, the camera hangs from the lens vs. the lens hanging from the camera.

Ooo! OOO! I just thought of a new selling point to the spouse.
"Look, hon, this middle-age spread is really getting out of hand. I was thinking about that gym down the street. Starting fee is $350 and then it is $150 / month. What do you think?"
(spouse ruffles papers, punches numbers on calculator, has worried look on face)
"Yeah it comes out to $2,150. I know its a lot but next year would be cheaper. But it occurs to me I could just go out and buy weights. I happen to know where I could get some that I'd be willing to heft around all around the town for a mere $1,650. Would that be better?"
heh heh

Trust me, it is worth the difference. AF is much faster too.
I'm no Arnie and I lug the 70-200L 2.8IS attached to a 10D with Big Ed on one shoulder and a 100-400IS attached to a 1D on the other for up to 6 hours at a time. All you have to do is keep repeating "No pain - no gain".

Instead of painting the camera, how about this?
It floats, is very light (Gitzo can even carry it the wuss that he is) and is available in a wide choice of nifty camo patterns.

Smith & Wesson today announced the successor to the classic .44 Magnum... The new .88 Magnum. Rumors include the new modified double barrel, two-handed grip and 12 MB (that's MegaBullet) capacity!

You you feeling feeling lucky lucky, Punk Punk?
Would a double model 29 be a model 58? Probably not. The model 58 was a .41 magnum.
