I was trying to use my Digital Rebel and when I took a photo, err99 came up. I took out the battery, the CF, and the lens. Replaced them back on the camera, and still nothing!!! I don't know what to do. I am so upset. Does anyone here have any insight?????????????????????    :?:

Start by identifying the lens.

Error 99 means "I don't know what the problem is" by the camera body.

In some cases, it means that there is an older non-Canon lens, and the body is having communication problems with the lens.

It could mean other things.

Was the battery charged before this?

To me with my 10month old baby 10D it meant call Canon get the info on sending it in for service and wait 7-14 days for repair.

Basically, every 2nd or 3rd attempt it would half activate the mirror and give me the Error 99.

I sent it back 2 days ago.

The only times I have seen er99 either on my 10D or with any of the local amateurs I've been around it has resulted from the lens communication problem with older non canon lenses Bob mentioned. Of course, I am speaking from limited experience with the error, but I would check the lens first.

The lens is a good place to start,. as Bob and MediaMagic say,.. and hopefully you can isolate the probme that way..

But once again,. I am doubtfull,. if as you say,. the Error99 comes right back after powering down and starting back up.

Do you need to try and release the shutter to get the error 99...?

Will it power up and function otherwise?

What lens are you using and do you have another lens you can try?

I had this happen to me in the middle of a soccer game shoot. I started to sweat that I did something wrong. Turned it off/on the the error appeared again. I tried removing my Canon 100 - 400 L IS lens... cleaned the contacts and reinstalled. Error never came back (and that was 4 months ago).

Yes I used a different Canon lens on it and it still said it. I used an eraser on the connectors without success also.

With two different lense, I'd say that clinches it,. send it to Canon.
