I just received my TTL Hot shoe adapter # 3, Off Camera Adapter OA-2, and connecting cord 300. This setup does not work with me 10D, 550ex, 420ex setup.

I tried it with my Elan 7E, works fine but got this to get my 550ex of camera. I am bummed it doesn’t work. Any other suggestions to get the 550 off camera. Does the off camera shoe cord work? Do I need to get a ST E-2 or would I be better off getting another 420ex?

Let's take this one step at a time.

First, put the camera in to a simple mode, like the Green Box.

Second, establish that the camera works with the 550EX directly on the hot shoe. Do the same for the 420EX.

Next, connect the 550EX to the camera via the Off camera shoe cord 2. Establish that works. Do the same for the 420EX.

Next, what are you trying to connect after that? Are you trying to use the wireless communication system, or not?

When I first got this stuff for myself, it took several passes at reading the manual until I got all of the Master/Slave stuff working correctly. User error.

You do not NEED the STE2, but sometimes it comes in handy. The 550EX has that function built in, but (like I said) you have to get all of the Master/Slave options set correctly.

I wanted to be able to have the 550ex off camera and that control the 420ex. I dont have an off camera shoe cord 2, I wanted a longer cord so opted for the TTL Hot shoe adapter # 3, Off Camera Adapter OA-2, and connecting cord 300. Giving me 9' of cord.

I tried this system with my elan 7E and it works, I tried it with my 10D and it doesnt, I did put the flash right on the hotshoe of 10D and it workded fine. When I tried the 7E, I unhooked it and put it back on the 10D and no dice, obviously the TTL hot shoe adapter # 3 does not work with the 10D

You're out of luck. The only cord that supports E-TTL is the Off Camera Shoe Cord 2.

The problem I have with the off camera cord 2 is that it is too short and the coiled cord tends to pull over the tripod the 550 in mounted on. (CRASH). I fount it simpler to use the ST-E2 as the master and put the two 550s in slave mode. The price of the ST-E2 is cheaper than crashed cameras and strobes. I haven't tried cutting the cord and splicing in a longer cable. But that just makes more cable for someone to trip over. (CRASH again)

I completely agree.

If you have only a sync cord connecting the camera with the flash, then you can only sync flash in manual mode. If you have a complete E-TTL cord, then you get the whole works. The system diagram shows this.

Can't you use the following?

TTL Hot Shoe Adaptor 3
Off-camera Shoe Adaptor
TTL Distributor
Connection cord 0.6m OR THE LONGER ONE

I was looking at something similar, but for Macro work (see
http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=24543

This method should work with ETTL, having the 420EX as a slave, and the 550EX as a master on the end of the connection cord

Basically I needed something similar, but can get away with the off-camera cord 2. I think you will need to get the TTL connecting bits and bobs to make what you want work.

Hope this helps,

Mark

Not with the 10D, I believe the TTL Hot Shoe Adaptor 3 is what does not work with the 10D.

Gosh, you're right! There is a little footnote on the system chart that says this:

* Manual flash only
with the EOS-1Ds,
EOS-1D, 10D ,D60
and D30

I wonder why that is? Seems very odd to me...

Just to clarify that, the following will only work in MANUAL FLASH MODE with the EOS-1Ds, EOS-1D, 10D, D60 and D30:

TTL Hot Shoe Adapter 3
Connecting Cord 60
Connectnig Cord 300
TTL Distributer
Off-Camera Shoe Adapter OA-2

Still don't know why...

The system chart says nothing about the 300D (Digital Rebel?) not working with this gear, though it does have the camera on the chart. This is what the 300D sepc. says:

300D External Flash : E-TTL with EX series Speedlites, wireless multi-flash support

I wonder if the new EOS-1D Mark II will work with these bits and bobs, or if it just doesn't work due to physical restrictions with the cable?

I was told that this will not work TTL with any Canon Digital.
