From my minor experience...nothing.

As with anything i've found in all of life, to get a good thing, you must give a good thing.

You want money?

Give time.

You want a car?

Give money

You want a noiseless picture?

Give sharpness

Oh Timmyquest, that's cold. Neatimage is a magic bullet, and it will turn a fuzz ball into a tack sharp, noiseless picture.

Actually, I own it and have had mixed results with it. Like anything, there is a learning curve with, in this case, is pretty steep. I've taken the manual (downloaded and printed by moi) to bed with me twice. It's better than sleeping pills. Halfway through page two is the best I've done so far.

So far I've had the best results letting the program decide on the settings. (no doubt because of my ignorance of the fine points).

The only trick that I've found on Neat Image is to do as little as possible.

If I try to do some elaborate repair of a noisy image, I'll spend too much time on it and still get noisy or artificial results. After about the 30th try, I resolved to simply let it remove a little color noise and then stop right there.

I find it works GREAT for me.
It makes my DRebel 800ISO shots completely noise free, and allows for more sharpening later in photoshop.
The trick is to select an area that has no detail, like a wall, or sky or something. If you have no such thing in your image, the pre-made profiles seem to work quite well.

Top tip ? Read the user guide and sit and try all it says. There is no substitute for actually learning this software.

The difference between doing that and just guessing is huge.

I've only had it about two weeks but I'm now easily turning noisy ISO 800 (and to some extent 1600) images back into something that now looks great when printed to A3.

Cheers

I have to chime in with the others on this. I've used it a few times to get rid of noise, and the less I do, the better the result. It's a well done, powerful program but it does have a learning curve, and so far for me, just letting it do its thing without much interference from me has given the most useful results.

I'm not a pro, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Hahaha

(seems the Canadians are easily amused)

OK, I've heard a lot of good stuff about Neat Image software for getting rid of noise on high ISO shots, but where do I buy it? Is is on the shelf somewhere, or is it downloadeble? I'd like to get my hands on a copy.
TIA...........Bruce

Are you using the photoshop plug in or the stand alone?

In either case,. the best trick I can offer for ANY noise reduction program is using it on a layer in PS!

If using the stand alone you can use the orginal image as the bacj ground layer,. and then past the neat image file in as a 2nd layer... a little more work but it does the same thing.

By leaving the un filtered image as the background,. you can acheive a number of things that will help a lot,. you can alter the opacity of the "filtered" layer if you did too much Noise reduction (NR) untill you get just the right amount of NR for your liking, you can use the eraser tool to erase parts of the the top NR layer exposing the sharper background layer in specific areas, (I often do this with birds feathers) etc...
