Has anyone tried to do the Firmware update on an X's Drive Pro?

My drive works fine and I installed the driver but when I try to run the utility to update firmware it does not detect the drive. My computer detects it fine and gives me a drive letter. I am running Win2K Professional. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ovi

IIRC correctly, you can only do the update from a machine running Windows98 :(

I'm planning on trying the firmware update from my laptop, which is still running 98, when I get a spare nanosecond 8)

Hopefully, it will cure the 'long filename' problem that seems to plague the VxWorks kernel that is running the filesystem on the drive. The symptom is 'unsafe removal of device' during transfers when it encounters what VxWorks thinks is an illegal filename.

You usually don't encounter this problem when transferring camera files -- I was trying to use the drive as a poor man's USB 2.0 drive for transferring a bunch of music files that had long names, including brackets, spaces, single quotes, and parentheses..

I also found a problem with large (greater than 2 GB files) written past the first 4 GB of drive space. This cropped up when trying to transfer a 6GB VMWare virtual machine from one system to another. The VMWare virtual disk was written out as three 2GB files (to avoid buggy Windows filesystem limitations), and I found that I could only read back the first two files, if the third one crossed the first 4GB boundary on the drive. I had to copy the files in two sessions because of this.

The X's drive would be much more useful if they didn't use VxWorks' broken FAT32 filesystem support. Linux would be less buggy (and they wouldn't have to pay Wind River's per-kernel charge, either).

Good luck.

Oh man, don't tell me that. Where am I going to find a computer with Win 98?

Thanks,
