I found this link in a discussion on another forum.
I think it is a cool way to test the shutter lag on a PS camera.
I would love to hear what lag time you guys get that have the G7.
It is on my Christmas list so I have to wait to try it out.

For my G3 I got:
Lag afer having prefocused -- 0.09 to 0.1
Lag w/out having prefocused -- 0.6 to 0.7

Which seems about right in terms of what dpreview reported from their tests -- http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canong3/page11.asp. Dpreview has:

G3
Autofocus/Half-press Lag (wide angle) -- 0.7 to 0.9
Autofocus/Half-press Lag (telephoto) -- 1.1 to 2.2
Half to Full-press Lag -- 0.1
Shot-to-shot -- 1.9
Zoom from Wide to Tele -- 2.7
Camera off to shot taken -- 4.4

G6 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canong6/page11.asp)
Autofocus/Half-press Lag (wide angle Auto AF Area-Auto Exp.) -- 0.7 to 1.0
Autofocus/Half-press Lag (wide angle Spot AF Area) -- 0.6 to 0.8
Autofocus/Half-press Lag (telephoto Auto AF Area-Auto Exp.) -- 0.8 to 1.5
Autofocus/Half-press Lag (telephoto Spot AF Area) -- 0.6 to 1.5
Half to Full-press Lag (LCD) -- 0.2
Half to Full-press lag (viewfinder) -- 0.1
Shot -to-shot (record review on) -- 2.2
Shot-to-shot (record review off) -- 1.9
Camera off to shot taken -- 4.0

G7 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canong7/page5.asp)
Autofocus/Half-press Lag (wide angle - both AiAF & FlexiZone) -- under 0.45
Autofocus/Half-press Lag (telephoto - both AiAF & FlexiZone) -- under 0.6
Half to Full-press Lag (LCD) -- under 0.12
Half to Full-press lag (viewfinder) -- under 0.05
Shot -to-shot (flash off) -- 1.7
Shot-to-shot (flash on) -- 2.1 to 2.2
Zoom from Wide to Tele -- 1.7
Camera off to shot taken -- 2.5

G7:

prefocused: 0.1-0.15 secs
not prefocused: 0.55-0.7 secs
manually focused: 0.1-0.15 secs (same as prefocused)
prefocused with flash activated: 0.5 secs
not prefocused with flash activated: 1.0-1.1 secs (not sure if this is a valid test)

I tested my faithful Pro1 :)

Not a ’Laboratory grade’ test but careful enough to yield interesting results:

I almost always half press the shutter to get focus (and exposure measurement) in advance, and have learned the ‘right’ amount of shutter anticipation for shooting subjects in motion.

I hope you will find interesting to compare results.

S3 IS

No Pre-focus Delay was between .3 and .35

Pre-Focus delay was within .1, usually right around .06

All shots with flash off and ISO 400.

Very interesting. I tested 4 of my cameras and here are the results from worst to best. I am only posting the non-prefocus time because all of them take the pic virtually instantly when you prefocus:

Canon G3 --> .80
Sony R1 --> .50 (the R1 needs a lot of light to focus quickly -- its major fault)
Sony H2 --> .30
Canon SD500 --> .25
Canon 10D --> .10

The difference between the G3 and the SD500 shows just how much progress Canon has made with their AF system in just a few years. The SD500 is a very fast camera both in startup and shot to shot time.
