It's probably a little too soon to see it on the street yet. It usually takes a month or two to get them into stores once they're announced, and we just heard about this within the last week or two.

It's not yet available, I've read that it will be available in April. The price is supposed to be $ 1,299 / € 1,299 but the street price will probably be lower.
Info from Canon (http://www.cps.canon-europe.com/news/view.jsp?newsId=80023) about the lens and dpreview's news page (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0401/04012902canon70300do.asp) about it.
I'm waiting for it too....

Thanks all for the feedback..looks like the price in the USA will be
around $1000? or with the favourable exchange rate, £550?
Almost double what we can expect to pay in the UK... :(

Ok, check out www.xe.com as it is an int'l rate currence converter. This is straight off that site:
Live mid-market rates as of 2004.02.06 21:36:13 GMT.
US Dollars to Pounds
1.00 USD United States Dollars = 0.541220 GBP or 51.41220 pence if you will.
or the opposite way, pounds to dollars,
United Kingdom Pounds
1 GBP = 1.84768 USD
This is good for British, but not so good for us Americans.
That said, you will get about $1.79 to £1 because the banks have to make their cut and I end up paying $1.90 for £1, as the banks have to make something too. I play the $/£ game all the time.
That said:
1,000.00 USD United States Dollars = 541.063 GBP United Kingdom Pounds
1,500.00 USD United States Dollars = 811.543 GBP United Kingdom Pounds.
Understand??? If not I'd be happy to explain further.
Cheers from England,
Canuck

I realize that the exchange rate should dictate relative prices, but what happens when you compare the actual street cost of present lenses? They don't necessarily reflect the exchange rate.

or you could just use yahoo's converter:
http://finance.yahoo.com/m3?a=999&s=GBP&t=USD
£999 = $1,845 We pay $500 more for the same product
Buy it at B&H (http://www.bhphoto.com) in the USA when it's available, even with shipping costs and UK VAT it will be a lot cheaper than $1,845. :)
