Spent a couple of days over the Severn bridge chasing rally cars in the muddy forests of South Wales.
The first stage of the rally and it is foggy :(...a rare shot of Hirvonen as he hit a rock later in this stage and was forced to retire.

After the best part of an hour the fog finally lifted, just in time for an entertaining run by Niall McShea

I moved posts for the re-run of the stage, SS4

On Saturday I was at Halfway for SS9 and 12
The rally winner Gronholm passes close by (taken with the 17-40mm)

Another rainbow means it will be raining again soon

Second run of the stage and despite a huge drop the cars go at full chat

and finally a view over the area where the 18km stage was run

The rally was an interesting experience but lacked the magic that a few MK1 and Mk11s would have brought to it
Thanks for looking.....more shots from both days can be found in my gallery.

The shot with the rainbow caught my attention. It will be hard to catch another shot like that.

Nice shots, you're the second person I've seen on here who braved the elements here for this rally :D
Really like the last one, but maybe a bit of saturation would make it a bit more striking :)

These are excellent. The last shot in particular is superb. I do however, really like the shots with the 17-40 as well.
Top stuff,
Simon.

Thanks for the coments :)
The weather was a pain both days, fog, cold wind and rain but that's what a rally should be run in, so I'm told..... I would have preferred some snow:cool:
Simon, I do like using the shorter lenses for rallys and you certainly get close to the action.
Glenn, Wales always does that to me........as soon as I pay the bridge toll the weather gods start:rolleyes:;)

Good stuff John. Didn't fancy this myself, I much prefer something with some escorts!
Really like the Gronholm shot. Did you have any trouble from the Marshals getting in to this sort of position? I have a 17-40 waiting to be opened xmas day, which I plan on breaking-in on the Wyedean.

I was behind the safety fence for the shot with the 17-40mm, actually sat on a big rock as the "fence" was only deployed to a height of a foot. The section marshal said as long as everyone stayed behind the line of the fence he wouldn't have to raise it any higher and nobody did.
It was really relaxed as to where you stood as long as you weren't in a stupid area......no different to the Wyedean or Sunseeker set-up.

Thanks Darren.
Both the rainbow and Gronholm shots were taken at the quarry, I was sat on a big rock on the apex of the corner. There's a picture in my gallery of that "bank" taken before the cars starting running.
I look forward to seeing some of your shots to see what the angle was like from the outside, I got comfortable on the inside and didn't end up moving during that stage :o
