View Full Version : Canon EF 24mm f/2.8

I noticed the Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 is missing from our Lens Archive Thread. I've owned one for about 5 years and have always enjoyed it. On a full frame body it is a fantastic lens. On a crop body its still good and a worthwhile addition to anyone's collection.
First, some of the basic technical stuff.
The lens is very small and light. Similar in size to the 50 1.8 but a whole hell of a lot better built. It uses the basic AFD focus motor so there is no full time manual available. However, focus is very fast due to the small size of the lens and reasonable quiet compared to other similar lenses. It has a non-rotating front so polarizers are easy. The lens hood for it is petal style. Filter thread is 58mm.
The 24 is stellar when it comes to depth of field. At f22 you can get everything from 50cm out to infinity in focus. Even at a more reasonable f11 you can still get everything from around 1m out to infinity in focus. Close focus distance is about 25cm.
Back in my film days this used to be my go to for wide angle. Now, it has become a solid general purpose lens. I often find myself picking it up before my 17-40 as its small size make it very easy to carry around.
Photos all taken on a RebelD (300D) at ISO100 with no post processing

Here's an example of the bokeh of the lens. This was handheld, f/2.8 1/1000 ISO100, no PP.

It does exhibit slight distortion as can bee seen in this attachment. Nothing major though.
Citizensmith

It does exhibit some vignetting at f/2.8, even on a crop body. However it isn't too bad and only really obvious in photos with lots of even sky. It diminishes rapidly and is completely gone by f/4.

I'll set up a couple of comparison shots against the 17-40 and get those posted shortly.

I bought this lens last month and absolutely loved it. Works well in low light and night time at f/2.8. The autofocus is so much more accurate compared to the 50 f/1.8. It's a bit loud when focusing but it's not bothering me that much. Here's a snap shot from today.

I've been using mine for about 12 years and I love it. Tack sharp and great color rendition. I used to use it a lot more on my FF film camera. I use the 10-22mm lens on my 20D now so I can get down to 24mm again. I miss shooting 24mm fixed though. The fixed lens always seems to make me think more when framing shots, which is a good thing.

I had the exact same experience. Got it for a film camera and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. When I switched to digital I actually stopped using it for a while as it was no longer a wide lens. I finally realised I don't actually need it to be a wide lens, it can be a (slightly wider than) normal lens. I ditched my 50 1.8 which I'd never really liked anyway, and the 24 now gets a lot of use as my walkaround lens.
I agree with your second comment as well, being a prime it does tend to make me behave a little better when paying attention to framing, content and such.
Oh, and as I mentioned earlier, I will provide a comparison to the 17-40@24 but being Chreeesmaaas and all I've been busy. :)

Of course I still bring it with me everywhere and I still put it on the 20D all the time. It is a great walk around lens:

I just noticed this thread (thanks to Citizensmith) and would like to contribute to it. I think that the little 24mm f2.8 is not appreciated enough at all - which is really pity because this lens is extremely good. Here are some samples (all shot handheld with my 10D) -

Olegis,
I have to revive this thread. Those Santorini pics are stunning and this lens really seems to be quite under-rated.
Sure I'd love to have the 24L- the build quality, color, saturation blah blah blah, but for 1/4 of the price this lens seems to be a bargain!
I was initially turned off by the digital-picture review of this lens online but the proof is in the pudding and this lens seems to bring the heat!

I was browsing a gallery of pics that I took about two years ago and noticed that many were taken with my 24mm f/2.8 that I sold shortly after. I was a bit surprised and thought that the lens did pretty well and here's a 'wide open' f/2.8 shot on the 5D at ISO800
http://recordproduction.smugmug.com/photos/323748054_bLcYK-XL.jpg
Not too bad. I am saving for the 24 f/1.4 due to the light that I shoot in but if f/2.8 is enough for you I'd say it's a bargain.

I know this is an old thread, but I feel that this lens doesn't get the attention it deserves, so I thought I'd post some photos taken with it. #1-6 are taken with 5D and #7-8 with 450D. They are just snapshots from Christmas with family in Sweden, so please do not judge the artistic aspect.
24/2.8 is a great little lens. Quite sharp in the corners even on 5D and small and light. I really love my 35L and had planned to get 24L too, but 24/2.8 is so good that I don't think I will. It does suffer from vignetting at large apertures (especially on 5D) and since it lacks USM it makes a noise when focusing, but it's quick and accurate, so I don't mind. I really enjoy using it on both my cameras.
It worked great for indoors family photos too, but the people in them don't want to be displayed online, so unfortunately, I can't post those.
Hope more people will post their photos!

I just got back from a trip to the UK a couple of weeks ago. I'd thought about which lenses to bring. 17-55, my 70-200, normal stuff. In the end all I put in my bag was the 40D and my 24 2.8. Worked great, such a competent little lens.

Yep, the 1.6-crop body and this little lens is an excellent travel combo. On my last two trips I used it for 95% of all my photography and for the last 5% I used the 50mm f1.8 MKII. And still I wished for a lighter kit ;)

This lens is severely underrated. I've had it for most of the year and have used it on a 400D, 1D classic and 1D2. It's been my widest lens since I've had it and even on the 400D, it's not too shabby as a focal length.

It's often said that the nifty-fifty should be the first lens for the budget-concious (or budget-strapped ;)) DSLR beginner. It's been in my case, and I managed some nice & sharp close-ups of flowers with that lens, also nice portraits. But for landscapes, the nifty-twin shure is the 24 f/2.8 !
I've seen here some very, very remarkable shots (including portraits & flower close-ups). My next lens will be a 24 !

It's basically a giant cannon tower, collected from the German battleship Gneisenau, which was bombed by the British in 1942. It goes 15m and five storeys/levels down into the rock, with a total weight of more than 800 tonnes.
Below the cannon, inside the mountain, there are engine rooms, power station, mess hall, ammunitions storage, sanitary installations and various facilities.

Why do you say that?
msowsun
10th of March 2010 (Wed), 12:49
Because it is wider. 28mm is more of a standard lens on a crop. 4mm makes a big difference.

Exactly. I really loved the FOV of 24mm on my 10D after trying 28mm and 35mm lenses. YMMV.

I wanted to add to this thread with one taken with my EF 24mm f2.8, I really like this little lens.
Taken at f5.6, 1/640 sec, cropped a little bit off the bottom, changed to monochrome (the only color was a little rust) & resized in DPP.

All my shots are on a crop sensor.
I only used this lens a few times then I sold it here. It works great, but I needed a zoon so I bought the Tanrom 28-75 2.8.
If you don't really care about distortion thats cool, but from what I've heard is that 24 and below will show distortion so I stuck with right at 24mm to minimize that.
Here are some more shots I got with this lens.

Even though I have had 24/2.8 and 24LII for 1½ years I haven't really compared them until now.
24/2.8 compares well in the center and I don't hesitate to use it when I don't want to carry much, but the L has much sharper corners, less distortions (such as bent lines, CA etc.) and more contrast and saturated colors. No surprise there.
What did surprise me was that 24/2.8 is wider! I don't know how to measure it exactly, but I guess it's more like 22mm than 24, if we assume that the L is 24mm.
Dillan_K
18th of January 2011 (Tue), 22:26
That is interesting, Helena! I would not have guessed that. I like the focal length a lot. It's wide enough to seem very wide, but I do not have to pay attention to what I'm doing with my feet when I take a photo.
For me it's much handier than a zoom. I can put it in my pocket and take it whenever I bring my camera. If I want to travel light, I bring the 50mm f/1.8 and the 24mm f/2.8. Yes, I'd love to have the L, or even the tilt-shift version, but for now I'm pretty happy with the f/2.8 version. It's my only wide angle lens, and it does a fine job for me.
Helena
19th of January 2011 (Wed), 04:42
It is a fine lens indeed! In my previous post I may have sounded overly negative, which wasn't my meaning. That the L is better doesn't mean that the 2.8 is bad - quite the contrary, I really like mine! That it is a bit wider is a big plus. It's just the 24LII is such as outstanding lens.
If I'm honest with myself 24/2.8 is good enough for what I shoot at that focal length, and I'm sometimes considering selling the L, but it's hard to get rid of such a good lens. We'll see. :)

hi everyone ... i'm currently thinking about getting this lens for street photography. what do you think ... does it have a better IQ than a standard zoom lens? i also own a 17-50 f/2.8 which is quite good. But i hope to find something lighter with a bit more sharpness & contrast. Like my 50mm 1.4 - which is really cool but 50mm on my crop is too much focal length.
I already thought about the EF 28mm f/1.8 (not to mention the sigma 30mm which i sent back a few month ago because of front focus). But these two are quite expensive.
Shall I try this one?

That depends on which camera you are using. I recently let go of my
24mm 2.8 because my 17-40 was sharper at f4 than the prime at any
other aperature on my 5D2. I also briefly tried the 28mm 1.8 but it has
horrible corners (very soft and aweful bokeh). However it was very sharp
in the center even wide open. I think the 28 1.8 is ideal for crop cameras
where you dont see the nasty corners (as is the sigma 30mm 1.4!). If you
don't need the speed you should take a deep look into the Canon 17-55
2.8 IS, it's the king for crop cams in that range.
Dillan_K

Gepixelt, I can't really answer your question directly. The 24mm f/2.8 is not bad, but it isn't the sharpest lens in my bag. Take that statement with a grain of salt, though, because I do have some rather sharp lenses as companions. The next lens in line would be, I suppose, the EF 300mm f/4L IS, and it's wickedly sharp.
I do think it would be more discreet than the zoom for street photography. I like this lens because I can take it everywhere and I barely notice that I am carrying it. It gives a unique look on a full frame camera too.

The lens is actually pretty good when I stop it down. Another one at f/10 on my 5D:

I'm still keeping this thread alive. Here's a shot that I took over a year ago in Jasper National Park. I must be the last person using the 24mm f/2.8!

Considering picking one of these up as I don't have a lot of money to put towards lenses and I only have a 50mm f/1.4

I was in the same boat. Of the cheaper available wide angle lenses, the 24mm f/2.8 had the best reviews. It's a pretty decent lens, in my estimation.

That is beautiful Dillan! Good composition and really nice colors.
For a while I had a 24LII and during that time I didn't use my 24/2.8. Then I started to notice that I rarely used the larger apertures, and eventually decided to sell the L. Instead I got a 17-40L, which impressed me a lot, so I'm still not using the poor 24/2.8. It's a shame, because I really like it. I intend to keep it and hopefully I'll find use for it soon.

Thank you for commenting, Helena. Hopefully you'll find a use for your 24mm f/2.8 soon!
Taemo, nice shots! The beach shot makes me miss the ocean.
I use the 24mm f/2.8 for portrait occasionally, but I have to be careful because it's pretty wide on full frame. Here's my son taken with my trusty 5D:

Thanks, seeing your baby pic makes me want to buy another 24mm f2.8 now again.. I really regret selling my old one.
Thinking on selling my 35 f2 and maybe get a 24 f2.8

I used the 24mm f/2.8 for a little architectural photography while visiting downtown this morning. The light could have been better, but I still got something acceptable:
