WELTERWEIGHT WARS - Shots from the Showtime doubleheader at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. The card featured two welterweight bouts between Miguel Cotto-Carlos Quintana and Antonio Margarito-Joshua Clottey. Fun card, the two main bouts were very entertaining...got a few decent ones, but was generally frustrated with what I ended up with...just felt like an off night...it happens. Thanks for looking.

Nice series! I shot Joshua a while back ... very powerful, dynamic and intense fighter ... a bit like Tim Bradley was at the card I shot Friday (images posted here.) My next effort will be to concentrate on telling the story better with my images as you do ... I think it is time for you to venture back out here to God's country for wine tasting and shooting. Perhaps if we get the MMA events at the casino! :-)

Thanks guys, Dwight I know you shot Clottey before (I was two spots away from you...hehe) He's a tough shoot because a lot of his features get lost in the shadows, he is intense though and an action guy. He broke his hand in the fourth round, and the bout seemed to change a bit there.

Appreciate the comments, I wasnt happy with what I got on Saturday, although ESPN the Mag picked up two of the Margarito shots from our wire service, no word on whether they will run though.

Dwight, I could use another trip to the winery...

The lighting and exposure is awsome on those. What were they shot with and what settings?

Generally around 2.8, 1/500th, iso 1250...some I went to 1600 and 1/640th, just to see...varied a bit, but mostly in that range...Thanks.

As always Ed your pictures are fabulous. What lens do you use for boxing?

Generally I'm using a 24-70 on a 1D Mark IIN and a 70-200 on a 1D Mark II

The first posted shot seems to sum up the set pretty well...

The sequencing of the photographs was a little bit confusing because of the slight similarity in the last names...

Does the IS come in to play on the 70-200mm 2.8 IS at any time at all?

(some unrelated info:)
I pass by Pompton Lks. monthly on the way to Saddle River...
That's a bit of a haul for you to AC isn't it?
My older brother does it on resort business from time to time, from the Poconos...

John,

I do not have the IS version of the 70-200...wasnt necessary for my shooting.

It takes about 2.5 hours to get to AC from my house, not too bad at all, you get used to the travel, I shoot mostly boxing, so I'm in the car quite a bit between NYC, Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods and Atlantic City...

Dwight was not there, he's a west-coaster, I was I'm an east-coaster...I was wearing a red Rutgers baseball hat, always do...

They crowded us about two feet away from peter and toney, you have no idea how hard it was to get them in the frame...two big guys...

I will look for the Red Ruggers hat from now on..

Dwight, do you wear something identifiable regularly at these fights?

I have a picture of Ed in his hat somewhere posing with his computer game cover ... I'll see if I can find it.

I dress for stealth when I shoot ... black shirt (with my logo) and pants, no hat. You can see me in the attached image ... I had walked around to the opposite side of where I shoot ... remote is in my left hand.

Nice work there Ed. May I ask how you time your shot so you get the action and also are in focus? I shoot some Thai Boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I usually focus and wait until some action happens but by then I will sometimes be out of focus.

I use the 50mm 1.8 for those. I will try to set it to 2.8 but usually on the small shows or tournaments I go to the lighting is not that good.

zoti, I've shot with him and can assure you he uses "The Force" as in Star Wars! He seems to know when the good punches are going to come about a minute before hand. Also, he uses the best equipment in the world with the fastest autofocus as seen in the attached image, which includes the cover of the video game for which he provided the cover image.
