Well, I have found a canon 75-300mm non-IS for a good prices, and have read some conflicting reviews on the lens sample archive page.

Is this lens worth $100 dollars, I don't need L quality pictures right now, how does it compare optically to its cheap little brother, the nifty fifty?

Thanks for the help!

If you're looking for a 75-300, go for the sigma 70-300 EX DG APO Macro. That sigma will out perform those canon 75-300s any day, in my opinion. The price does seem nice, but I think after a few times use, you'll regret your purchase.

You can't really compare a $100 zoom to a prime, even the cheapest prime of the lot - the prime will absolutely kill it on image quality without a doubt. Heck, my nifty fifty had better IQ than my 17-85 at f/4 easy. Not quite as versatile though :p If you do all your shooting at f/8 or so the difference may be negligible but the 75-300 wide open compared to the 50mm at the same f/stop is going to show quite a difference...

Thats understandable. Thanks for the input.

If you are looking for a lens to practice, the price is good. The Sigma would be better.
I take pictures of airliners with it and can get good results with the old 75-300. You can take a look if you want.

But you will want something better quite soon. Sometimes it's better to keep the 100 and save more for a better lens.
Just my 2 canadian cents

ditto, I'd skip the lens for the Sigma.

For $100, I think it's great. I'm sure you can find it used for less too. I love mine and I have no intention of selling it... even though I have a 70-200L. I've gotten many, many wonderful shots from it. For the price, it's awesome.

I would save for the 70-200 F4L, it's around $550.00 new.

I've had this lens for about 5 years and have had a lot of fun with it. I think it is a great lens to get your feet wet. I've seen it for 60-75 used.

The Sigma 70-300 in either the non-DG (yellow) or DG (red) are very affordable used... It isn't hard to find one for 150CDN or so around here.
