Hello All,

I am new to photography and I just ordered an AB800 but was told that a Light Meter is a must.

I don't want to buy a $700 Light Meter as i don't have the foggyist idea on how to use one. I would like a fairly decent meter though. Don't know if i could get by with a model $300 or less meter?

QUESTION: Which brand/model would suffice? Also, what type meter should i look for? I plan on taking mostly portrait photographs

One of the most popular meters around here is the Sekonic L-358. I have one and it takes care of every metering need I have run into. I do have the 1° spot meter attachment for mine, but don't yet have the Pocket Wizards transmitter module.

The L-358 works like a charm. I use it with the RT-32 pocketwizard transmitter but in a studio setting, I bet you can get away with just a long cable.

I just got the L-358 and love it. I fire my strobes with a sync cord but I always have the option to upgrade to PocketWizards. If you're thinking of getting PocketWizards you might want to be the module from Sekonic when you purchase the meter because you'll get it for an additional $50 as opposed to buying the module after the fact and paying $100.

If you're considering the L-558 you might want to look at this:
