Not if you want full E-TTL metering (which you do.)

Look for Sunpak flashes. They do have dedicated units that in some cases are better than the OEM flashes, and far less expensive. I have a Coolpix colleague that swears by Sunpak over the Nikon SB units.
Personally I wouldn't go with any other company than Sunpak for a third party manufacturer.
I can recommend normancamera.com or bhphotovideo.com, you can call and ask questions. If you call B&H, be very specific with your questions, they are straight up but they're going to want to spend a mimimum amount of time with you.
Norman Camera (Kalamazoo, MI) is much more laid back and has competitive web pricing and will often price match B&H.

I have an SB-24 Nikon flash that is the same size as the G1, so it is awkward to use, nonetheless, it does work, although firing only at full-force each time. I have compensated by placing some white vinyl (from the sheets they make decals out of) over the flash, and it has dimmed it enough.
By putting it on the G1, it becomes very top-heavy, but it's nice that you can angle your flash with it, up, sideways and straight on.
So, anyway, jsut thought I might share it with you all, and Nikon flashes do work on the G1.
