Yes it was in Dixon St in Sydney i took 400 shots and kept about 50....Is that normal ?:)Yeah, its a good thing if you see it that way. I like to see it as a chance to capture as much as you can even if they come out bad, least you have something to remember the day by.

From what I have seen, there are hardly any bad/soft copies of this. I bought mine out of pure faith and was sharp even wide open. Friend went and tried 2 copies the same day, both sharp.

Is a great lens for me specially since I decided to go full frame by the end of the year. ;)

Yeppers. I've stewed over this thread for a few days now and decided it's a perfectly capable lens for the cost. It's decent priced, usually super sharp and pretty fast. What more could you ask for? :D

OK, I've not been a big lurker in the lens forum and probably haven't studied as much as I should, but is HSM the equivelent of USM? Faster focusing?

OK, I've not been a big lurker in the lens forum and probably haven't studied as much as I should, but is HSM the equivelent of USM? Faster focusing?Yup. HSM is Sigma's version of USM. Nice and quiet focus also which is great. Tried it out on the Sigma 12-24 and I loved it. HSM and Sigma tend to favour Nikon lenses which is really frustrating.

I am really asking someone to convince me to go for the Canon version over this. So far, I have had no reason to. Focus is fast enough for my liking but HSM would be a nice bonus. I always look for a lens which is usable wide open. Why make a lens which you need to stop down to f/4+ before it gets sharp. If a lens says f/2.8, I would expect it to perform sharp and the Sigma does. :)

Exactly!

I had a Canon 24-70 that I rented for a week and I loved having that range in 2.8. Since I'm not made of money at the moment, I'm hoping that the Sigma version will keep me happy for a bit. Everything I've seen in this thread is telling me that it will. :)

Be warned, the Sigma will prob weigh slightly more than your body. More close to 1.5kg whilst shooting without flash. Good workout starts now.

How much did you pick it up for?

Good luck on both! I'm looking for the sigma 70-200 2.8 to replace my canon 70-200 f4. I do alot of indoor and twilight baseball and football, so I HAVE to have the 2.8.
As much as I would love to have a 5D it's not something I have plans on persuing anytime soon. :D

2.8 is essential for me also. I shoot a lot of nightclub work so I need the wide open apertures. 5D and its noise handling will be awesome.

I'm over my lust for white lenses. Now, I wouldn't turn one down, but I'm not going to seek one! I just added this lens and the Sigma 70-200 2.8 II this week and I feel my gear is complete. (Well, ecept a new bag because my stuff doesn't fit in my backpack now and a teleconverter)

I think I got pretty lucky on the lenses and am totally happy. I was really worried that I wouldn't feel that way though because I had used the canon version of the 24-70 for a week first.

I'm not sure if I know enough about bokeh to even comment on that. It's never been one of my concerns as of yet. It seems everyone has a differing opinion as to what bokeh really is!

So is the background blur pleasing to me? Yeah I guess it is. :D

I used mine for footie on the weekend. Felt odd since im not used to longer reach lenses. 250mm handheld trying to track a player was hard. Still great work there. What make you chose that and get that close?

I don't really have the money for a 24-70L and I think that shot proved to myself that I don't really need one

I photograph alot of motorsport but rallying is my first love, that shot is on the inside of a tight right hairpin bend and the cars were passing 6-10 feet away

I have just seen this thread and thought that I'd add that the 24-70 is a nice, fast and sharp lens even when used at a motorsport event

I cant see the need for me purchasing the Canon alternative since im finding it is just as good. Minus my gripe about filter size but ive never really given it a second thought anymore.

I would like to give it a go at more sports, sadly no rally stages in London.

The white speckles on the un-blossomed lilac are actually polon, i didn't sharpen this image at all.

This lens is crazy - I just got it. Its a beast! One of the cons I've read is that it has a stiff zoom, and it does, but for me, its not really a con - I like it. the 82mm filter was a bit pricey but I still have gas money, and it weighs a tons.

I'm going down to a park - day off, 41 + sunny + new lens = happy:D:D:D:D!

Pics tonight. Lets see what it can do!

That's a good day in March for the 2nd cloudiest place in the North America.

I am in desperate need of a repacement for my 18-55mm canon lens. I am really considering this lens over the Sigma 18-50 and similar Tamron. I already have the Sigma 10-20mm and 70-200mm and think this would be a nice addition. There are some wonderful photos in this thread. Any thoughts as to the comparison with the Sigma/Tamron 18 (17)-50?

I posted this a while ago in the macro forum but thought I should post it here as well. This was taken with my 24-70 with a Sigma 2x TC attached. I have been missing my Sigma 150 macro and when I saw this Cicada I thought I would improvise. When attaching the 2x you loose most of the zoom range because of the fit and I am not real sure if the aperture works or not (I didn't really test it extensively). Anyway, in a pinch this is what you can get from the Sigma 24-70 and a Sigma 2x TC.

This is a full frame shot with minimal sharpenig.

I just bought the Siggy 24-70 this afternoon. So far, just playing around with it at the house, it's very sharp at 2.8 over a variety of focal lengths. I'm impressed so far. This is my 3rd Sigma lens. They have all been really excellent.

FWIW, I had a 17-55 2.8IS in my hand at the store. Considering it's cheap plastic build, it's just not a $1000+ lens to me. The Siggy is much better built (nearly on par with my L glass) than the EF-S lens. As for the 17 mm end, if I do any group shots I'll need to stop down to 5.6 or so anyway. That sounds like a good use for my 17-40L. ;)

honestly, I had no intention of buying this lens, but at $229 (Australian) delivered, it's pretty much a steal! Paid through paypal, so I know I'm covered...

It was probably a typo, but we'll see what happens. :)

and if the seller goes through with it, once it arrives, I'll see if it's worth keeping. If not, I could probably get more for it on ebay than I paid! :)

and if the seller goes through with it, once it arrives, I'll see if it's worth keeping. If not, I could probably get more for it on ebay than I paid! :)

So.......????.....Has it arrived yet?

I just ordered the new HSM one but they sent the older Macro Ver - all good resending the new one will take some pics with it when it arrives in the next few days - took a few with the new Macro one, fairly impressed except for the lens flare hopefully the new one doesn't suffer as much....

What I want to see is f2.8 shots with this lens. Is f2.8 useable, or you have to step down to get a sharp image?

Very usable at 70mm. A little bit softer at 24mm, but still quite presentable.

39mm with minimal sharpening:

I went to my local jessops to try this in the shop.. i went in as im having a hard time in trying to find the right lens and this is in my top 5 choices from the pics ive seen in this thread :)

Seems most places dont stock lenses anymore as its stock which is laying about so they say.. So this was the only lens to try out of a few i wrote down on a bit of paper... Now i know i it was low light in the shop and dark outside.. but the pics i got from the lens was appauling..
I had just got my eyes tested as well so i know it aint my eyes

The camera had focused on something but when i came to review it on the screen. it was so far out of focus.. i couldnt make out what it was... didnt really say anything to the bloke as im still getting used to the 40D, *only bought it a few weeks ago So i put it down to me*

Ive since come home and tried my 50mm 1.8 mkII and its completely different.. Gonna try it properly this weekend in proper light to make sure it isnt the camera.. As the box was open when i recieved it
Im hoping it was just a bad copy

Bought this lens to replace a Tamron 28-75 I dropped on the icy deck of a cruise ship...I was pleasantly surprised. Fast AF, great build quality, relative to Tamron, and priced well enough in a pinch...glad I have this now. Still want to fix the Tamron though (is so compact!)

Does it hurt to manual focus this lens with the focus ring popped into manual while the autofocus switch is set? Seems this is kind of like a full time manual focus when used this way, though you actually are dragging the motor while focusing.

Nice shot Karlos. What noise software do you use?

I don't use any for this shot, no point at iso100.

If I am using NR, its either in DPP at the raw stage, or in GIMP with either
1. Gausian blur followed by a fade on colour mode
2. Wavelet denoise (similar to individial noise reduction on the RGB channels)
3. GreyCStoration, this is horribly complex and slow, it can take up to 20 minutes to denoise an image and sometimes even when its using 100% on both cores, sometimes it is not much better than wavelet, but when it does work it does a great job

Just got this lens recently and finally had a chance to give it a good workout.

I found that focus on this lens can be inconsistent. At times it'll be razor sharp but sometimes the focus would completely miss and the picture comes out as a blur. Haven't done enough testing to pinpoint a certain setting on the lens that gives this out-of-focus situation so I'm not ruling out user error yet.

Anyways, here's a couple from a set taken a few days ago.

It might be. It doesn't happen too often so I'm not put off by it or anything.

Another thing I noticed is that it doesn't focus in live-view if its life depends on it. It'll hunt and hunt, and stop with an OOF picture. All my other lenses are fine with live-view focusing, so it isn't user error or the camera's fault. Not too annoyed since I always MF when I am using live-view anyways.

I recently upgraded from my 1000D to a 40D and the hunting during live-view is gone. I think this lens has problems with the contrast detect focusing function. Since the 40D uses the regular focusing methods during live-view, it doesn't hunt at all.

Oh, might I add, this lens works A LOT better on my 40D than my 1000D probably due to the f2.8 cross sensor. My shots are a lot sharper on my 40D than the Rebel. I'm a happy camper :D
