I might have this lens soon :) Looks a good one too! It'll replace my Canon 24/2.8. I wanted to go wider (could have had a Canon 17-35/2.8L but I would have had to have saved up for longer). It'll be good to have the length without having to change to the nifty fifty.

It started raining just before the display last night so the fireworks werent as brilliant and smoke builtup due to thier rapid deployment to get it all over with very quickly. But I did get a number of decent shots with the 24-70 and it handled the weather admirably with the 1D MKII

I just picked one up today off Craigs and can't wait to test it out this weekend. I borrowed my buddy's 24-105L last weekend and when I first held the 24-70, I was like "holy crap, it's huge!" Feels super sturdy and robust, loving it already.

Love this lens. I took some shots tonight just while I was waiting for the baby to smile. Thankful that my copy seems to focus well (no front or back focus issues that I can tell), etc and noticed that 2.8 seems only a little soft to my amateur eyes, and by 3.2 its pretty sharp.
Here are some crops (not quite 100% but close). Converted to JPEG on DPP only. I was shooting at 800 so a little noisy. I am just so happy with this lens and for the price I love it even more! :

do most of these lenses have softness at 70mm f2.8? or only some? because i've read a lot about how it loses it's sharpness once it gets tele.

A short query regarding this lens. I recently purchase a SH copy of this lens in canon mount and it seems that the diaphragm( aperture blades) are not circular at f2.8 24mm looking through the lens. Is this normal or a sticky diaphargm?
thanks in advance,

No disrespect meant,
I'm not trying to be mean at all but what the heck is that? A dog? It looks like one of those hairless cats, like in Austin Powers.
The photo is nice but it could be helped by an off camera or bounced flash to minimize the 'green' eye effect.
All in all a great photo; heck it made me comment so it obviously caught my eye!
Nice job!

Do you use any micro-adjustment?
I had one of these lenses for a couple of years and always felt that the focus was 'off' meaning what should have been great photos were just average. I dropped the lens and am looking to replace - not sure whether to go for another one of these as I may have just had a bad one. Other options are the HSM (twice the price, heavier, not really much smaller) or a used Canon 24-70L (three times the price and second hand).
Think I'm probably best going for another one of these but unsure due to my past focusing issues.

I had to MF +15 to get it sharp. I still feel that some of my images look soft. I did however try out the HSM version and it is 100x better than the macro version.

My friend let me try out his 24-70mm to see if the range suits me on 1.3 crop. It doesn't, but my images turned out nor too bad. Slightly different from how I'd shoot, so this is one of those lenses that change your methods, at least for me.

I had the same dilemma back in Nov over these 2 lenses. I choose the 24-70 over the 17-70 because of the constant f2.8 and that fact that if I ever want to upgrade to FF in the future I can use it. They are both great lenses. I really love the 24-70 it stays on my camera most of the time. I like the bit of extra reach I get with the lens. If I do need something a bit wider I go back to my kit lens, which has only happened once for me so far. The price is a little more than the 17-70 but you might be able to find a used copy. It is a heavier lens but you get used to that after a few uses. The lens is large on my XSi compared to the kit lens. Good luck with your decision. I would recommend going into a camera store and trying out both lenses and seeing how you like them and the pics you get from them.

Below is a copy of what I posted about this lens to someone in another post.
If you got something covered for the wide stuff (below 24mm), then this range is proving to be very good. I'm really enjoying the extra 20mm or so for portrait stuff (on top the regular kit lens replacements; tamron 17-50/canon 17-55/etc). It's built real solid too. Only weighs slightly less than the 70-200. Also it's turning out to be pretty darn sharp wide open when I can focus that shallow dof properly on what I want .
Not to forget the pseudo macro shots you can make with it. And all at a really reasonable price. It's now the official #1 lens on my 500D.
This pic of My Precious was taken @f2.8 @ISO800 on my 500D (T1i)

As for a comparison with the 17-70 I can't help as I've not used the lens myself.

I don't know, but these are quite solid... EX series should last long. IMHO the oldness of the lens doesn't mean much... You can get over 100k images in 2 years, or 20k in 4 years...

I have the T2i and I have the 24 to 70 mounted on it. It is a BIG lens and a heavy one. If you are looking for a smaller form factor then the Tammy 28 to 75 F 2.8 fit the bill.. I have that lens too :)

When I had this lens on my old 5D classic, it had stunning sharp images, pretty much wide open. Now I use it on my new XSi (transition body) and everything seems soft. Anything wider than f4.0, gets soft images. Is it the crop issue or what? It's not the XSi body since 50mm f1.8 still takes sharp images. Help?

Sadly my 24-70 has some problems, it gets stuck at certain focal lengths and there is way too much free play between the barrels, need to send it in. It still rivals my 30mm in sharpness though, even wide open. From a trip to the arboretum with my girl today.

Ok, so this was a lot of experimenting. I'm shooting this lens on my XSi. ADVICE PLEASE!
I bounced all over on settings trying to get it right. There was a lot of the "fill up the sky" flash lightning, and not near as many bolts and streaks, so I did what I could. I know a better night of shooting would be better without all the extra flashes.
And powerlines. Couldn't find my tripod mount so i had to use my car for support/setting the camera on, so I couldn't go out to the fields and get away from the power lines.
Here we go! Click to view on black. View the rest of the set on my Flickr (link in sig)

Trading out your 17-70 to the 24-70 will give you the constant aperture across the range but just remember that you're losing out on the wide end (17 to 24). Where are your apertures most of the time? If you're typically shooting above f/4.5, it may make sense to stick with the 17-70. A few other facts about the 24-70 are that it's bigger, heavier, takes 82mm filters, and switching to MF involves flipping the AF/MF switch and pulling the ring to engage it.
Been a while since I've put anything up here, time to change that ;)

How does this lens compare to the Tamron for full frame usage? Why did you guys decide to go with this versus the Tamron?
I have the Tamron, but I love the form factor of the Sigma and I am consider to switch, but I want to know the issues. My thinking is, if the sigma was a clear winner, why does it seem like more people choose to loose the 4mm extra that the Sigma offers in the wide end?

I think the Tamron's have fewer bad copies with fewer AF issues and softness problems. If you can get one of these without AF problems and soft spots, they're a great lens for the price. For me, I wanted the extra 4mm width and the build.
Mine's taken some pretty harsh abuse. Dropped around 4ft. to pavement, smashed into walls in a crowd, fallen out of backpack to tile floor around 3ft, for some reason this lens just loves being abused  I've never had anything like that happen with my other equipment, only THIS lens . It recently bit the dust though out of the blue. Something's up with the AF assembly preventing focusing of any kind at times and I can no longer go down to the MFD. Happened when I was AF'ing for a shot and it all of the sudden locked up.

Yea, I was thinking this was the case. I will probably stick with my Tamron then. Sigma seem to have a reputation for spotty quality control off the production line.
Could this problem be fixed if I try to get one with a warranty where I could send back for AF issues and softness problems? I know they can fix AF issues, but would they warrant fixing softness issues?

Hope this is not a stupid question however I need to ask.
Is there a slight locking type of mechanism when you open the lens up to 24mm?
It's not a big problem turning when the lens is off the camera, however when it's on the camera and your in the "ready position" to take a shot and your zooming in and out going from 70 to 24 is no problem but once I shoot @ 24mm and moving out it's super tough to rotate.
Did I just buy a bad one or is this how it's suppose to be?
Mind you I can muscle it and get it to move, but I typically just tap the front of the lens and it moves much easier.
Thanks

Who has used this lens for sports photography? I need a complement to my 70-200 s2.8 and looking to hear about how quickly it autofocuses and responds in indoor sporting arenas? This is the discontinued model correct and not the new one Sigma just released??

This is the older one, correct. If you look on my Flickr stream, I have a bunch of examples of this being used for sports. There is a set dedicated to this lens on there.

Hi All,
I made a non-scientific comparison of the two Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX DG (non-macro) and the EX DG HSM version. All from RAW to JPEG and no sharpening was done nor noise reduction. All images are cropped, taken with a 5D classic and handheld and distance was kept. The focus point is to the letter "O" of the word.
Can anyone guess which lens was used for A and B??
Cheers.
