For those of us who are new to the Digital SLR, and haveing to replace poor glass with better, and to save some people from doing as I have in the past and get a lens that not used much. Will list the lenses you use more often from most used to less used. Assuming that most will do pretty general photography. (Snapshots, Portraits, Vacations etc)
I have found that my old favorite lens is seeing very little use now. (100 2.0 usm) and my elan 7 kit lens 28-90 4.5 lens is useless with the 10D.

Okay, I'll take a stab at this:
from most used to least.
1. 24-70 f/2.8L
2. 100-400 f/4-5.6L
3. 70-200 f/2.8L IS
4. 17-40L
5. 70-200 f/4
6. 50mm f/1.4
7. 100mm f2.8 macro
8. 50mm f/1.0
I have a couple older lenses like the 75-300 that I only keep as backups. They really don't get used at all.
CyberDyneSystems
7th of February 2004 (Sat), 11:56
1. 500mm f/4.5 (used to be the 50-500mm untill I upgraded)
2. 70-200mm f/2.8
3. 17-40mm f/4
4. 28-70mm f/2.8 (this replaced the 28-300mm... I know don't say it)
5. 50mm f/1.8
What I still want/need
I need a good 300mm, either the f/2.8 prime, or perhaps the 120-300mm f/2.8 zoom.
It's either one of the above OR if I can possibly get hooked up with one..
a 200mm f/1.8!!!!
I will also be getting an 85mm f/1.8 some day and perhaps a 135mm f/2

This is great help, I am trying to settle in with a few lenses and starting to see that I need a zoom of some sort, I guess I am use to using primes. I have yet to see anyone mention the 28-135 is.

Well with the 1.6X factor I will put the ones I use most to least.
1) 17-35 F2.8 L
2) 24-70 F2.8 L
3) 85 F 1.8 EF is one of the sharpest lenses you money can buy!
4) 70-200 F4 L also very sharp and a lot lighter than the F2.8 L which I had
And sold it off for the F4. Weight is a big issue when you
Are doing PJ for 8 hours and have the camera and lens on
A strap around your shoulder with an other camera in your
Hand like I often do at all my weddings.
5) 28-135 IS EF
6) 105 Macro Sigma. This is also a tack sharp lens and is a great buy.
7) 20M 1.8 Sigma which is New. Seems to be just fine. Need to put more
Time is with this one.
8) 300 F2.8 L sits at home rarely use this one. It attracts too much attention all the time.
So there is that's my line up and how I use my lenses for most to least used. Best of luck.

From most used to least...
1. 28-70 2.8
2. 70-200 2.8L
3. 50 1.8
4. 17-55 that came with the 300D.
I think I need a 17-40 zoom or a 28-135 IS for most of my general usage needs....

Have a couple of new lenses so there is not yet a clear pattern. However which one gets used the most will change with the seasons due to subject changing.

I have two lenses now, both Canon: the 17-40L and the 28-135. I don't favour one over the other - one is useful for some things, the other for other things, for example: the 17-40L is nice to use on the street, for landscapes etc., everything that needs a wide angle... (ofcourse)... and I use the 28-135 for portaits and for lower light conditions; the image stabilizer makes it very useful for that.
I plan to get the new 70-300 DO IS USM when it's available.

CDS,
The Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 EX is calling your name...I can hear it across the water in England! LOL!!! :)
Ok, what do I use??
Oh, man, this is a tough one...
Canon 16-35 F2.8L and Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 EX are used about the same, just different applications. This also the end of the high end glass.
I had a Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 lens that I sold. It sucked. It was a $140ish lens and it showed. I sold it and some other money floating got me the Sigma 120-300 F2.8EX lens. The other one I have is a Sigma 28-80mm F3.5-5.6 and that one was used a few weeks ago last and will see action in the near future, like when spring comes to use in comparison to show how bad cheap glass sucks. I know it isn't fair to compare an $80 lens to a Canon L ($1380) lens, but you bet you will see the difference!
I also have plans to add the Canon 24-70 L lens to my collection to get closer to bridging gap from 35mm-120mm. I am waiting for paycheck.
Cheers from England,

OK, in terms of time spent on camera, most to least:
EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS (by a mile - extremely versatile)
EF 70-200 f/2.8L (best quality of the three)

I (currently) only have the three but they serve my modest needs very well.
I hope that this helps.

For me, it's pretty much evenly spread between three:
28-135 IS - All rounder, reasonable zoom, wide enough, IS helps...
50mm f/1.8 - Low light, making myself think about composition, portraits and club shoots...
100mm f/2.8 macro - I love macro, and it's such a sharp lens that it stays on the camera as much as the others...
Basically one of those lives on the camera - I'm happy that I'll pick it up and get shots in most situations...
Then, my other regulars are:
75-300 (non IS) - When I need a longer zoom and am prepared to think about using it - it's a good lens, but it's far from point and shoot... Will get rid of it when I replace it with a 100-400 IS (Which I thoroughly recommend, even though I haven't convinced myself to part with the money for one I have access through a friend)
MP65 5:1 - Obviously useful only when I want extreme macros...
50mm f/2.5 macro - Sold it now, but used it half as much as the 100mm once I got it...
Cheers,
Stuart

Well. the week isn't quite up yet, but I can tell you that there are 2 new lenses in my "stable", with one more on its way.
The new 17-40 has seen a tremendous amount of action since I got it a few days ago, and the Sigma 70-200 from CDS is very likely to see lots of action. The Cannon 70-210 is slated for selling soon.
The third lens, due tomorrow, is a 50 mm 1.4. My 1.8 just doesn't like to focus on my 10D so its rejoining the Elan as a standard lens (and to cover up that gaping hole on the front of the body).
I've got a couple of breech-lock lenses as well, but they aren't used very often since they only fit the FT.
My least used lens is a no-name 600 mm monstrosity that I've nicknamed "Gitzo Leg" due to its ability to severely strain any tripod to which it is attached. It is also equipped with a mount for the FT.

As it's summer here i'm finding i use the long lenses alot.
The 28-105 lives on the camera and does a good job of being ready for most things-including being the base for the fisheye add on adapter.
Occasionally i use the 100 macro when i see something tiny 'round the yard.
..and i'm a little surprised i don't use the 50/1.8 more.Being summer plus having good high ISO capability influences that alot i think
