How do you bounce your flash on a wall behind you?

I'm talking my 420ex on my Rebel XT.

Swivel the flash head around 180 degrees, then angle upward as needed.

You can also do this to bounce the light off the ceiling when the camera is pointing downward, such as when you're shooting a small object on a table.

thanks Curtis, but won't your body block the light that is going forward to the subject.

If your question is about having a subject right in front of you and you wanted to bounce the flast right behind you, then yes.

You would probably get better results by bouncing the flash off of the ceiling, or if that's too high having a diffuser on the flash.

Having the flash not mounted on the camera would solve this type of problem as well.

(If I understand the question that is.)

won't your body block the light that is going forward to the subject. If you aim the flash straight back, and the camera is facing straight forward, your body will block some of the light. This will depend on the distance between you and the wall, and how you zoom the flash head. I normally pull out the wide panel to light up a large area of the bounce surface to create the softest effect.

If you tilt the flash head up a little, most of the light will hit the wall high enough that you won't block much of it.
