Go ahead and install Elements2...

They will both function fine side by side,. so you wont loose the use of PS6.

You may find that Elements iws a little easier to get the hang of for startes,. while at the same time,. it is similar enough to PS that what you learn in Elements will translate to the full PS just fine...

PS 6 is a much more full featured product in the long run,. but on the other hand,. Elements still has stuff that PS 6 does not..

Either way,. you can't go wrong.

I've been using PSE2 for about a year. I really like it. It does most of the things I need for post processing after BreezeBrowser. I recently upgraded tp PS CS, as eric1 was nice enough to post a link for the $299 PSE2 to PS CS upgrade. I am looking forward to editing in 16bitt , and using the tools that PSE2 doesn't have. In the meantime, while I'm trying to learn CS, I'll continue to use PSE2.
As a PS 6 owner, you can upgrade to PS CS for $169.

Thanks much for the feedback. I installed Elements and will give it a whirl. I like the interface. From your comment Scott, Elements will not work with 16 bit tiff files?

No, it won't and that's one of its major limitations. If you only shoot JPG, not a problem, but for raw I want to keep those extra bits.

Even PS 6 is limited in its 16 compatibility,. but I'm pretty sure it can handle 16bit tiffs.. there will be features that are unavailable. for the best 16 bit functionality it is PS CS all the way.

From the PSE help file:

"A high-bit image mode that can contain 16 million colors per channel. Photoshop Elements supports only 8-bit RGB color, an image mode that can contain hundreds of colors per channel"

If you try to open a 16bitt tiff file in PSE2, you get a pop up that it can't open it and asks you if it can convert to 8bitt.
