Me using one of my uncle's lenses, plus teleconverters. Honestly can't remember if this is a 70-200 or a 100-400. I think it's the 70-200. I had two 2x converters on it as well if I remember correctly. I had his 20D in my hands as well. He was out in a canoe at the time, and my cousin took a shot of me with my Digital Rebel and my 28-135. Lets just say when my uncle and I get together we're basically a walking photography store. :p

Sweet......I would love a chance to shoot the 200/1.8 in the field and see what it is like. 400 DO is also one of the others I'd like to try.. the rare, exotic stuff really. Speaking of exotics...

Noice. The example at Aus CPS just lays around gathering dust these days. They sometimes wheel it out to our local PMA etc but they don't ship it to CPS-attended events (MotoGP, F1, and Aus Open Tennis) anymore.

It's the final word in low-light event photography like this. A shame it's no longer available as I could really use this bugger on a full-time basis, but there's no way I'm springing USD4k+ for an ageing lens with a limited service life with a strong chance of replacement in the short to mid-term. This example was already showing AF issues although it is well used.
I used the 400 DO once when it was first released. Pretty impressive kit but at USD5k it is overpriced IMO.

Yeah it would be worrisome if anything happened to the lens. But there's hope - you mentioned a replacement coming sometime down the road (of course we don't know exactly when)... hmmm...very interesting thought!
Come on Canon, 200/1.8 IS - give us the ULTIMATE low light monster and slap 4-stop IS on just because we can..... that would be the BEAST!
Fully agreed the DO is a little bit (understatement) expensive...

I wouldn't even care if they backed it off to f/2 like they did with the 50 L replacement. But IS is a cert.
Next year sometime would be nice - just not at the same time as the new 1-series - I can't afford a total refresh of camera bodies AND a new expensive lens all at once!

Your not the only one that feels this way
I've said it before and I will say it again, it's not the gear that is important. That is the one downside of POTN in that it encourages you to buy more kit when you may not need to. Members on POTN encourage Gear Lust in others and that may not be the best thing to do. Having top of the line kit is nice, dont get me wrong, but unless you follow best practice you wont see a significant benefit over the quality consumer lenses, and by best practice I'm talking about using a tripod, mirror lockup, shutter release cable, better than 1/lens length for shutter speed, good stance etc etc.
What is important is having an "eye", being able to see a picture, composition, balance etc, and being able to put them together until you have a quality picture rather than a record shot. Look at the great photographers, pick anyone you like, did they have L lenses? I seem to remember the HCB only used 3 lenses for most of his shots, 35, 50, 85.
This thread is supposed to just be a bit of fun, if you let it get you down then thats going to affect you next time you pick your camera up which is a terrible waste. Go out and take pictures, push your kit to the limit, and do the same to yourself. You will be a better photographer for it.
All the best

Pinto,
This was shot in the Galapagos. The animals are so tame and trusting that a handful of bread crumbs was all that was needed. I would get anywhere from 1 to 4 birds in my hand at once but at four they all started squabbling. I should mention that over most of the Galapagos you cannot touch or get near an animal (they may touch or get near you) but this shot was in one of the few towns in the islands. This was at the home of Jacqueline de Roi, mother of Tui de Roy who is an outstanding nature photographer. Jacqueline has been feeding finches for decades and her yard was absolutely full of birds.

Close, but no cigar on the latter.
The short one looks like it could be a 35/24L, or even a 17-40.

This is a picture of me holding a relatively expensive lens on a 1D. You just can't see the camera and lens because it's taking the picture. A quick peek at the EXIF will reveal the identity of the lens...
By the way my friend gave me the mysterious plastic object in my hand as a birthday present joke. I'm not sure how to use it.
In this thread it's not allowed to use such very expensive and professionally gear. ... ;)

That is an exceptionally nice photograph. However, I find it hard to imagine a set of atmospheric/light conditions which would allow the camera alone to capture the hues as well as the DR......but, hey, there is always Photoshop to lend a helping hand there.;)

This shot has lending hand from PS for saturations as the RAW file seemed washed out. Although his jpeg file of the same shot was fairly similar to this result.

nice beer belly
That was completely uncalled for. I suggest you reread the post below and refrain from making derogatory remarks about others.
BearSummer
