View Full Version : Scenes From An Icy Cold Shoreline

Went out for a hike through the snow-covered sand dunes shortly before sunset and came away with these. I wish the sky would have been a little more dramatic for the first, but after the long hike, I had to take what I could get. In the 3rd and 4th shots, those are broken sheets of sand-covered ice scattered along the shore.

Really lovin 3, the clutter of the ice sheets contrasting the smooth exposure on the water. A wonderful image....

Number 1 by far. Awesome (subject) contrast between the fiery sky and the cold, somewhat subdued dunes. It's like looking at two completely opposite environments. good job. /Dan

Number three for me J T, it has the right mix of colour and exposure with a hint of graininess. :)

:lol:,what do you mean by that ?
What on earth is wrong with that sky ? its gorgeous Jim.
And btw...i`m in for the 3rd one.;)

When i see the sky usually nice but only low near the horizon , i try to keep a small part of it in the frame, you know...just the lovely colours.

#1 is outstanding and warrants at least a 30" X 24" wall presentation in a nice frame !!! #2 is too contasty. I like the others but they pale by comparison to the 1st one.

I like number 1 a lot Jim and with Christmas just around the corner I would like that framed and matted please! All kidding aside, I love all the different elements in the first one. It's just stunning!!

A really beautiful set of photos - you said that you wished the sky in the first one had been more dramatic, but I think it is just right as it is :)

To inspire you to have a wall size printed and to frame it for your wall ... here the 1st one is framed.

And thanks everyone else who responded with the kind words. :D

Love #1, Jim. Very pretty sky and good composition. That storm was a dandy, from what I heard.

Well, the snow you're seeing here isn't from the storm last week. That one pretty much fizzled out in our area. However, on Monday, we had about 6" of snow from lake effect (cold, artict air blowing across Lake Michigan sucks up the moisture and just DUMPS snow along the lakeshore like a snow machine)

:lol:,what do you mean by that ?

Well, I think I meant the clouds a little more broken up, able to see some clearing. Honestly, I don't know where those pink/purple streaks of light came from. I made the hike to the shoreline not expecting any drama, but suddenly the sky began to glow. I swear there weren't any breaks in the clouds, but somehow the light managed to get through to produce that color. I almost slipped and fell (the snow is packed VERY hard on the sand) several times as I was scrambling to find a good shot before the pinks faded away. So I guess it was a matter of good timing (and luck) on my part, and that less-than-dramatic sky turned into something special.

Very nice shots Jim...Well I can't decide between 1 & 3 ;)....I think I''ll go with 1. Very natural and pleasing colors in the sky...and the hint of snow tells its own tale...

Hi JT,

I like number 1 due to the fact you have no colour cast on the snow. The contrast between the peach coloured sky and the clear white snow is very interesting. At first glance it almost looks like a black and white image stuck onto the bottom of a colour scene.

Of course... this isn't the case.

Nicely done.

Cousin.

Thanks again for the kind words, guys. :) I have some more icy cold beach shots that I took yesterday, I just need to process them.

Brilliant! I need to go north and look for some snow Farmington is a bit boring for shots right now. Great Job!

Since you're on that side of the state, you should head up to Lake Huron and get some nice sunrise shots!
