Is it possible that they could be coming out with a version with IS in the next four months??? thats when i will be getting my 400 and if there have been rumors of it coming out in 07 sometime then i might wait...if there is a chance at all?

It is very possible I guess since this is basically the only Current White L lens that does not have IS.

It sure could use it, being f/5.6.

Then again, Canon might just dump it and come out with a f2.8 IS version and sell the f4 for cheaper. Who knows.

I assume your joking. They already have a 400 2.8 IS

hmm... are you seriosuly confused??????
anyway, although IS wouldnt hurt the lens, i certainly dont have many times when i really would have died to have had it. mostly because i shoot birds in mostly good light or on a mono/tripod, so its not a big deal for me. i wouldnt not get the lens purely on speculation.

Oh yeah that's right. I guess I was thinking of the 500mm lens.
I have neither of these lenses and don't think I would ever buy one anyways. That is a lot of money.

It seems they could make that lens around the size of the Sigma 120-300, eh? The "200-400", that is.

No need to go to Sigma......just take a look at the Nikkor.;)
It's gonna sell for about $4.5k.

I wouldn't pay that for f/4. I'd just take the 100-400. f/4 isn't worth THAT much more than 5.6. It's not a $3k difference...to me.

Well, also see the 400 DO price. That's an f/4 and a prime to boot.

That's a prime, though. That's not a hinderance..that's a good thing. It's DO, too, to save on weight. Only thing that concerns me there is that I hear the AF speed is a bit of a letdown.
Now...if it were L prime IQ quality, I'd consider your "200-400".

I envy Nikon shooters only on two system components they've got and we don't (yet ?):
(1) The said 200-400 lens
(3) 200mm f/2.0 VR

For that price of a 200-400 L I would rather buy a 100-400 IS, 70-200 IS and also a 180 L Macro. Just sayin, I would never spend like $4500 on a lens like that. Oh sure it would probably be a killer like the 28-300 L but I could never see myself owning it.
Although I would love to buy a 28-300 L and prove everyone here wrong that its as bad as many people say. I say it has pretty good potential.

Well I predicted the 70-200 f4L IS a year ahead of time but I have not predicted the 400 f5.6L IS.
I would think demand would be high so it could be on the cards unless Canon need a market differentiator between the 5.6 and the 400 f4 DO or something, but you would think nealy a factor of 4 in price would be enough.
If they do they should also reduce the minimum focus distance.

I don't see Canon doing anything with the 400mm f 5.6 The beauty of this lens is that it is light, sharp at all f stops and inexpensive. To make it an f 4 would make it heavy and more expensive and also competitive with there current 400mm f4 lens. To add IS would also make it compete with their other 400mm lenses and raise the price substantially. The 70-200mm lens doubled in price with the addition of IS
