I usually add any text in a bottom border, not in the picture area as I find that writing in the photo usually detracts from the image.
I assume you use Photoshop, but should be similar for other programs. If you want to keep a copy of the photo untouched, make a copy of the original by "saving as", then, on the copy, use the text tool. Alternatively, when you create the text, it puts that in a separate layer, so if you don't merge the layers, you'll have the original image available if you save in .PSD format.
Good luck,

Thx for the post, but I want to submit and print it online. Do they take .PSD format?

Probably not and it would take awhile to download as .psd's with layers are large files. In that case, make a copy of the original, type in whatever text you want, merge the layers and then save in whatever format the online service takes (probably .jpg)

Does it degrade photo quality when merging text layer over it?

No it won't if you're using PS. Many people insert © symbol on their work. You can save as and select jpg as file type and it'll merge the file but it'll allows you to continue working with layers. But the beter way if you need to keep the layers is to save as PSD or tiff and then save as jpg for printing online.

Thanks all! Greatly appreciated for your responses. Will try and print two versions to compare.
