View Full Version : Which version of the three?

I shot this using the Hoya R72 IR filter on my G2, and after seeing others use different conversion methods working with ifrared images, I tried all three on one I shot today. Which do you think works best for this image... any of them? Pleaese add any other comments/critiques as well. Each image had a levels adjustment. They are in the following order:

Top = Actual color straight from the camera
Middle = Black and White conversion using lab color
Bottom = Duotone version (forgot what color)

I think I'm leaning toward duotone.

The first does it for me - like the colour reflection of the sky in the water

On my crummy old P266 laptop at work, number 1 takes the prize.

Great image for IR! This is really sweet...

I like Number 2 a lot as well.
#3 seems to loose too much of the contrast and that IR "whiteness" I like so much.

Ansel would be proud

Thanks guys. You know what, I think I actually like the actual color version also. My mind wouldn't let me accept that one at first, because I had done only a levels adjustment on it, and nothing else (apart from resizing, and sharpening). Subconsciously I'm thinking "processed images are better".

Haha, thanks buddy  From now on I'll probably always wonder :P

#1 and #2 are great. I guess it depends on whether you want the colors or not. Personally, I like the colors, but either picture is fine really.

#3 just seems a little dull.

Well I stopped in now that I'm home and have a reall monitor,. #3 is looking a lot better.. I actually like the subdued nature of it a lot on the big Sony.

I still think I like the "Outer Limits" look of the first image,. but it is definately not as tranquil as #3.

And Laz,. you have my word,

If I don't like it,. I'll tell you!

No contest, number 1 for me. Fantastic work.

Thanks again everyone, I really appreciate the input.

At the suggestion of BlueSky, I swapped the red and blue channels, and slightly cropped a bit off of the bottom. Here's the result... I think he was right, I like this one best of all.

Chris,

No question for me : the duotone (surprise! ;) )

By the way, you said that #1 is straight from the camera. I guess that you used custom white balance. Did you set it before the shooting or during raw conversion phaze?

I use the expo/disc to set white balance for my IR pictures. They look practically the same (in terms of white balance ;) ) as #1.

your remake is nice, allthough I think the sky is still a bit distracting since all the detail is in the trees and rocks. Maybe if you pick the blue cast up in the water a bit more it would get the eye to stay ballanced back and forth. Right now it is all about the sky and not about the great picture you took.

Before shooting. I used a white piece of paper to set it. I don't have an 18% gray card, so I had to use the back of the map, of the park I was in :)

I remember Gandini asking me once if I used a custom white balance when shooting IR's and I completely misunderstood him. I replied with some kind of jibberish about "tungsten blah blah blah". I've been doing it the hard way this whole time, just leaving the white balance on "daylight", and setting a white point in the conversion. Setting it prior to shooting gives a much cleaner shot. Oh well, I guess it's better to figure this stuff out late, rather than not at all.

Oh, thanks Matt, appreciate the input. I guess I like the last version because I usually don't edit my IR's in that way. I guess I see it as unique for now... which will change of course, the more often I do it. Thanks again.

My preference is for the first.

The photo imparts a mysterious feel, somewhat like a remembered dream... The other shot which tone down or swap the channels tone down the mysterious 'flow' of the image.

The rusty sky mixed with the pale blue trees is great (it's a reversal of the brown tree trunk / blue sky relationship we normally would expect...)

Great pics all of them, BUT my vote goes to Number one. All the pics could stand alone.

ps new to this board, I find this Critique Formun an excellent learning tool.

I like the water in the first picture. If you can add that to the second picture, I think that would look good.

The water in the second pic seems to reflec too much of the trees and it looses some of the mysteriosness.

The rusty coloured water in the first pic is very spooky. But, I think that the colour in the trees is too different than the rest of the composition in the first pic.

But the pic that I like the most is the bluesky one. It stirs a lot of emotion with the light and shadows on the snow.

That's not snow, it's sand :) Here's the same place without the IR filter. Thanks again!
