Looking to get this lens to acompany my primes. How does it perform on a FF 5d?
I don't have a 5D, but I have a 1DS ( FF ), and I could go do a little experimenting if that would tell you anything ?

I've had this lens for a long time and it's almost permanently attached to my camera these days. It's just a nice everyday lens that focuses quickly and quietly while providing pretty sharp images.

This was taken in 2002 via 35mm film with an EOS Elan 7e:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4048/5168113905_04967c93d7_b.jpg

This was taken just a few days ago on a 550D:

Granted, I still have a ton of different lenses on my wishlist, but this is a solid everyday performer.

This was the lens that I got with my XTi way back in 2008, and it's a great lens to carry around. It's got a good zoom range, it focuses very quickly and accurately, and it's small and light.

why is it that this lens does not get that much attention as a budget great all around lens? I really think it out performs any of the kit lenses by far, even as good as the new IS version is, this lens is still better in my mind.

the other kit lens goes to 135 on the long end but I still think this lens out performs that one in the long and wide end as well. ohhh and its a faster lens than both.

lacks IS, yes. but at around 150 dlls you really can't go wrong, IQ is outstanding, love mine.

the only lens really that will replace mine is a 17-55 2.8 or a 17-50 2.8 OS

Agree, its a great lens and back in the day of film it was a very popular lens. I guess it is the 1.6x crop factor that ruins the wide angle experience of this lens on Digital SLRs.

If Canon ever release a full frame sensor in their budget lines then this lens would probably become sought after. But I don't see Canon ever going full frame in cheaper models as the ef-s system creates lots of new revenue in people buying new lenses.

I got the mk 1 version (5 blade I believe) but doesn't seem sharp :(
In low light (or poor light for that matter) it really struggles and pics are grainy. In very good light it seems great. However, I've struggled to get sharp images, mine come out blurry, I'm guessing its my technique which is wrong. Anyone with the mk1 version care to chare sample pics/thought?

Thanks

I think you answered your own question. In good light you are getting good shots, so it is likely poor technique that's tripping you up in low light. Try taking some of those same low light photos of something that is not moving, with your camera on a tripod and you'll probably see good shots. You are most likely getting camera shake from your hand held shots at too slow shutter speed.

Thanks for your input kitacanon. (Are you in the pic?)

I went out and about today to try out the lens alongside my 50mm mk II.
It was a sunny day which helped. I'll have to try out some indoor shots though.
I think I need to alter my technique holding the camera as I think I am causing some camera shake which is affecting the pics :(

I used to use it on 20D and it was great travel lens - lightweight and versatile. It is quite acceptable wide open, sharp at 5,6 at all focal lengths and very sharp from 7,1 but even though images are sharp they lack some details, it's strange - but its a consumer lens and for the money it can be got - it's great. Main cons? Contrast needs to be boosted to achieve such effect as below, and the barrel tends to move out - the lock would be aprreciated.
First and second one were taken with polarizer. All are at f/7,1 except last - f/8.

Heres a couple from mine got this for a steal, an eos 5 and 28-105 for $100 AU. Owner believed it was a terrible lens that couldnt take good shots. I brought it as a quick fix ( needed a wide for shooting an event)after killing my 17-40.

First one was used for a magazine article 2nd one used for a web article. The publishers had no problems with the quality.

Sometimes if you dig deep enough when doing your research before making a purchase, you can find a real bargain. This 28-105 is a beauty with it's fast USM and overall focal length coverage. It's pretty sharp wide open but razor sharp when stopped down a 3rd or more. This lens will get some heavy use outdoors this upcoming year.

kitacanon

Yes, the 28-105 is a very nearly perfect lens for such nice portraits...
... @5.6 it is as sharp as any portrait lens need be...and a bit of post processing can enhance it further...

I was about to get the 24-85 (again, this time in "champaigne"....I had liked the 1st one I had on my 10D, but it wasn't wide enough) based on "research"/rumors that it was better than it's black-clad brother, but it shared the same linear distortion (bowing) at the wider end, and after a few C/C shots vs the 28-105, the 28-105 seemed better than the 24 at 28mm

...using the 18-55 as an 18-35/F4 and the 28-105 as a 28-70/F4, adding the 70-210/3.5-4.5 EF I got what I feel is the most affordable quality kit of Canon zooms...
(that was before the 55-250mm came out, though I think I still prefer the older 70-210 for the wider aperture)...
...add the 35/2 and 50/1.8 MKI for available light shooting and you have a wonderful bag of gear...

...only my love for MF Nikkors keeps them in my drawer too often...but when I travel the 5 CAnons always travel too...

I agree! In fact my photographic equipment is exactly based on them, along with an EF 28mm f/2.8 and the shining star of my lenses, the EF 50mm f/1.8 MkI (which I ADORE). :-)

I've jumped ship and sold my 28-105mm, the reason being I got a Sigma 18-125mm HSM OS lens. I find wide open this lens is much sharper than the Canon which I always found soft at f3.5. Also, I get a real 28mm wide angle on my 10D body. The sigma is slower and noisier to focus than the canon but it does have an image stabiliser and overal a better focal length range which makes it a much better daily lens than the canon. The Sigma is a lot heavier though.

I think you should look at the 35...not as wide as the 28 of course, but I found the 35 to be a better lens...
It's nice to see I'm not alone in putting together this "kit"

...the quality of shots you can get with this budget ($350 for the zooms, another $150 for one of the primes, or as little as $100 if you go with the nifty50) is really great....much better than I often see gotten with much more expensive gear...

Nice portraits here!

Seems like this lens isn't very popular, but it still produces some nice results for the price. Can't wait to get mine. $125 seemed like a good deal. I had on with a Rebel XT years ago, and I never really had a complaint about it. We'll see how it goes with the 5D II.

I started to use this lens overt the past month or so and have to say the images are really nice usually. I do get the odd pics where they come out too bright so not sure if the lens have sticky blades or the camera struggling.

I would still have liked IS with this as it seems I am a little shaky and have gotten used to my kit lens with IS!

I don't use this lens very often, but given the focal length range and MFD, it does get a little action. Here's one from a little while back:

I guess we can now call the 28-105 the Coke Can now.. similar to the 16-35 Coke Bottle.

One of these things is not like the other...

I really just wanted to show off my lovely green tabletop from IKEA

I'm going to be moving from this lens to the 16-35 & 70-200. Oddly enough, I use my 100mm macro for everything compared to this lens.

I really like this lens. It is handy, small and sharp.

Shot below is almost a 100% crop. Lens is a great walkaround lens but I really should have had my 200 with me. I wound up shooting all day with this.

Don't see too many standard Camry's around, so major props!

Used my 28-105mm f/3.5 attached to a Canon EF 12mm MkI extension tube for this close up image.
