Hey there,

I've recently bought this lens for 200 euro's (Which is about ehh 265 Dollar), together with a Hama UV Filter and a Hama Polarisation filter.

Is any of you guys using it? I Haven't had the chance to take any good pictures yet, been very busy with school/work :(

If so, let's see some pics, and i'd like to hear your thoughts on the lens as well! I'd rather have bought an L Lens offcourse, but that's WAY out of my budget, and this one goes pretty good, it's way smoother then the Kit-lens, and has just a bit more zoom to it... bummer it's 28 and not 18 though .

here a link to a similar thread. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=244195

basically the lens is great but its not very wide on a crop camera. most of the time i use either the lens kit or the 28-105, depending on the shooting situtation.

I loved this lens. only replaced it recently with a 24-105L that i think is about the same shaepness. The 28-105 was my first upgrade lens.

This lens is very often overlooked. It's a great lens for the $230 price tag. I owned one and sold it after I got the Tamron 28-75, but when I had it I was always pleased with its performance. Fast auto focus (USM) and good range for my film camera.

I have no problems recommending this lens.

The lens is capable of producing very sharp pictures in controlled conditions, usually soft wide open but gets very sharp at around f5.6 not the best for low light usually misses focus in low light specially when using low shutter speed of around 20 or less used over that and you are find.

Shot at f5.6 hand held at 1/15 Sec. ISO 100 I know crazy 105mm RAW CONVERTED USING DPP sharpness put at 4 and Image quality when using batch process at 10 ( for the Crop first pic )and Image quality at 7 ( for the full pic 2nd pic ) at 7 to be able to upload it.

I have just changed to Sony because of the internal IS on the camera body, much more convenient and economic, I will receive equipment on Wednesday and will post some test if I am allowed, as soon as I win the lotto I will come back to Cannon and and probably then they will have a 24-70 2.8L IS which will maybe cost twice as much as the current version, combined with a 40D. For now I will do Sony Alpha body with SSS Super Steady Shot and KM 28-75 2.8

New to the forum, i loved this lens when I had it. Recently switched over to the Tamron 17-50mm. I still miss that lens a lot, i took a lot of good photos with it. The pics above aren't the greatest (i messed up the camera settings :o ) Anyhow, the pics were taken at Pride 32: The Real Deal.

Great lens for the money. Lightweight, metal mount. Very fast and silent USM focus. The focal length range is excellent on a FF body and still very good (or just as good, depending on how wide you shoot) on a 1.3X crop body. On a 1.6X crop body, I probably would have used it on the street.

Naturally, like most lenses this benefits from some stopping down. At f/5.6 and f/8 things look pretty sweet. CA is minimal throughout the range and not critical, IMO. At the wide end there is noticeable barrel distortion and there is noticeable pincushion distortion at the telephoto end. They won't be critical in most photographs but my present as bowed lines in some landscape photos with an obvious horizon line, or architectural photos.

The copy I had exhibited zoom creep when the lens was pointed downwards but it's not a consistent phenomenon.

The front element does not rotate so it makes it easier to use a circular polarizer. Do note that the lens seems prone to flare as well so use the hood whenever possible. That said, the hood will not solve flare issues in all circumstances and you'll need to hold your hand out to shield it from the sun, quite an absurd proposition if you're shooting handheld.

Overall in practice, this was an excellent lens. This lens did over 95% of my photos in a recent New Zealand trip. For me, the range was simply magical on a 1D:

I've only had one outing so far with this lens, and so far, I think I've gotten a bang for the buck. I find it's sharpest beyond ap 5.6 at the shorter end, and beyond 6.3 at the longer focal points. While I own a 17-40L for which I don't worry too much about where it is sharpest, I'm still quite impressed by this cheap little lens :) Here are two examples. The first at 5.6, and the second at 6.3. USM has been applied to both.

I cannot show any photos, but I'm very unhappy with my example. Yes, it's got a well damped zoom ring, no lens creep, well damped focus ring, and the fastest focus I've seen, but it produces awfully soft/blurry photos (and that's not my photo technique to blame). I'm planning to send my example to B&H to trade it for a new example. Anyone knows if that's a problem...?

I know that many people have sent their lenses to Canon to repair their brand new lenses because they were soft. You might be able to exchange from B&H or send it for repair to Canon.

This was the first lens I ever bought and I have a few fond memories of it. Recently I borrowed one for a re-test on a 350D and 5D, but now I look through it with the eyes of someone who has been spoiled rotten by an L. While you should bear that in mind, I still think I can be objective about this lens.

The 28-105 is soft wide open at all focal lengths. Seriously soft. The 24-105 f/4L IS USM I am currently using blows its socks off. But bear in mind we are talking about the difference between a $150 (used) lens and one of Canon's very finest (and I have a SUPERB copy of the 24-105 that is hard to find). You pay the extra money for an L to shoot it wide open. The difference is stunning - I took a photo of someone's new jacket with a price tag and bar code and with the L I could read the bar code

The surprise is optical vignetting/cos^4 light reduction/falloff: even on a full frame 5D, the 28-105 holds its own against the 24-105 at all focal lengths. There is very very little falloff. I think this is because the 28-105 was designed for film in its day, as a very credible midrange lens.

However, if you can, stop it down a little and the 28-105 starts to shine. Across the zoom range ranges, it sharpens up a little by f/4, substantially by f/5.6 and is quite nice at f/8 (I do not test beyond f/8 generally). I have some frames from my previous copy at f/11, it's all good.

Is there a difference? Of course there is a difference between the top of the range. I still feel the 28-105 delivers tremendous bang for the buck though - at $150 it's a lens virtually anybody, including a broke SLR n00b (as I was when I started out) can afford to own. It makes a very nice 'midrange tele' (approx 44-170mm FL on crop cameras) that covers the traditional role of the 70-200 on full frame with a wider wide end. The big surprise is that stopped down, this lens is actually capable of producing very reasonable results even on the EOS 5D whose 12.7MP sensor will wring the best and worst out of every EF lens. It will never be a 24-105 or a pixel peeper's lens, but as a lightweight walkaround or backup standard zoom, or for days when you don't absolutely need to pixel peep.. it's great! I wanted one to pair with my 1D classic when it was here - that would have been a great combo. Actually, I'm so tempted I might want to get one just for the sake of getting one ;)

Recommended, with confidence. Enjoy :)

Looking at your gear list, I'd say it would be a good replacement for your Sigma. More reach and faster at the long end, nice quiet AF. I've had one for a few years now and used it for film and on my 30D. I've always been very happy with it. Just bought a Tamron 17-50 2.8 for the wider end and faster ap, but I'll definitely keep the 28-105 as a good all rounder for the days when I just want the camera and one lens for the day.

Just do it. (is that a trademark infringement?)

Edit: Mine is the USM II. photozone.de reviewed the first version and were very complimentary. review here (http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/Canon%20EOS%20Lens%20Tests/45-canon-eos-aps-c/189-canon-ef-28-105mm-f35-45-usm-test-report--review)

I was thinking the same thing about the sigma...its really a great budget lens..i wanted just a tad more reach.

Thanks for the info.

Today I had my first real shoot outside with this lens and I was blown away by the sharpness and how quickly the focus locks on. I can no longer justify getting an L lens! I have the newest version of this lens, 7-bladed aperture, made in Taiwan.

The only problem I've encountered with this lens is that it gets confused focusing in low light - not a problem if you have that annoying flash AF assist strobe activated (I have a 10D).

I'm fairly new to this forum and I do not yet understand the obsession with ducks... but I happened to see one today so I got a quick shot.

does anyone know if there is a difference between the MK I and MK II version?

I thought the one i got was the MK II, but it seems its the one..however, i was told it had the 7 blade aperture inside....

New owner of this lens in the original (Mk I?) version. Bought it from B&H used department for $149. So far, just been playing inside with it, so no excellent outdoor shots yet (though I'm shooting an indoor children's event tomorrow night with it).

(Special kudos to B&H which had the lens rated as an 8+ condition. It looks for all the world like brand new, no marks scratches or anything.)

Since I was also playing with a new flash unit at the same time, here's a nice sample that I got out of the combo. This is at full 105mm zoom, wide open (f/4.5). Cropped and resized for web display, no USM applied. Focus point (center point only) was the forehead just above the eyes.

Hi all,
I was looking at these photos as I have this lens. One question I have and maybe this isn't the area to ask it. But When you proccess your pictures if you shoot raw or set it in the camera for jpegs or if you use it after, where do you set the sharpness? The only way I get really sharp pictures like the ones here is if I crank up the sharpness when I process in raw or RGB in DPP. And in my mind, wouldn't you want it to be the sharpest it could be? Except occasionally for portraits at times maybe. Any input?

Thanks,

If shooting jpeg, you can set the sharpness in the camera. If PPing, you can use use sharpen and unsharp mask in PS.

I've been shooting with tis lens since buying it with my EOS 30 in 2000 (which is on eBay at the moment). I'm upgrading to an EOS 40D when I pay off the lay-by. I have the II version of this lens. I decided to keep it as I figure it's a better lens than either of the kit options (18-55 or 17-85 EF-S lenses) even though I lose a bit because of the sensor. Hopefully I've made the right decision. Judging by some of the photos on here, I have.

I was in a similar position. I used the Canon EF 28-105 3.5 - 4.5 II USM on my 35mm and kept it when I got my 30D. It's my one lens option when I'm just out and about and have the camera with me and works brilliantly in that role. It is a bit of a compromise at the wide end but the variable aperture isn't that slow, good AF, nice colour. Well you know, you have it.
In short, I think you've definitely made the right decision.

My decision was based on reviews on photographyreview.com. The way I look at it, if I need to go wide, I'll get the EF-S 10-22 lens. Also from what I've read on phographyreview.com, it's a pretty good lens.

I've only had my new 40D for a couple of days and haven't really taken many pictures with it. The shots I've taken with this lens on autofocus come out blurry indicating the autofocus is out becuase when I focus manually the photos come out clear enough, as clear as you can expect for a non-L lens. My L lens on autofocus produces sharp photos without having to adjust focus manually. I guess this mean it might be off to Canon to get it sorted, though going without it for a few weeks is going to be tough.

Tesco have these in their sale for £130. Is it worth a go at this price? I've got a 400D and wonder if it'll be a little long on a 1.6 crop for general usage? I say general usage, as I'm not a photographer who shots specific things, as such, more someone who takes snaps where ever I go, and want a bit more control / quality than a P&S gives me.

I rang up Canon Service. They say it will cost me about A$140 to readjust my lens plus the cost of shipping it back and forth, so all up I wouldn't be up for more than A$200 to get it fixed. Better than having to spend A$700 on a Tamron 17-50 or A$1300+ on a Canon 17-55 at the moment to be able to take photos. Maybe I'll save up and get one of these lenses or just get the Canon 10-22 to get the wide angle shots...

This is turning out just like my home theatre subwoofer - bought it for A$1000 8 years ago and spent half that in the last couple of months to replace the amplifier.

Turns out I wasn't imagining things. I just rang Canon to check and they found a front focus problem which they'll try and adjust as best they can. It won't cost as much as I was quoted initially (which was really just a rough estimate). So I'm happy I'll be able to take photos and get to grips with the camera in a week or two. I have a new filter waiting to go on the lens when I get it back (a Hoya HMC UV(O)) to replace the Hoya Standard UV I put on it not long after buying it.

There aren't any real ducks easily accessible from where I live so a stuffed toy might have to do...

Okay, NOW I can post here...haha! I got this lens earlier this week and have been impressed with it. I think the build quality is very good and I love being able to focus manually while still utilizing autofocus. These are a couple of shots I took this afternoon. I was impressed with the color reproduction personally as no filters were used and very little PP was utilized (mostly exposure and brightness). In the past month that I've owned a DSLR, the only way I've gotten colors this rich was with the use of a circular polarizer or a ND grad (makes me excited to see the results when I use them!!), but it is natural looking (this is pretty close to how it actually looked today).
