Ok, Ronnie got a new camera body. Being the unofficial POTN book maker, it is my duty to let every one know that I am hosting a pool to for when he sells it. Squares are $10 usd and basically unlimited. You must give date (day, month and year plus time for tie possibilities). All bets must be placed by new years Pacific STD time. If sold before then, all bets are off. If interested, place an additional $10 and name the camera body he will buy.

LOL, this is just good ole Ronnie Busting folks. But if you want to send me $10 PM me. LMFAO. Hope you enjoy your new toy for a spell Ronald!!

alright, here is my bet. he is getting his 1DmkIIn today so i am saying:

1/07/07 he sells that tamron 28-75 he bought
1/12/07 he sells the 1D
1/14/07 he picks up his 12th 24-70

as for the body, i am betting that he will pick up a 30D with either a bigma or a 300 f4IS.

New camera, 5D again.
Blonde's already got it down right for the whole tamron to canon 24-70 business so I won't repeat it.

Seriously -news maybe a bit slow here in the sticks- what has Ron brought/sold besides what he posted Monday or Tuesday:

"1DMkIIN- $3100
(2) 2GB Ultra II SD- $80
Tamron 28-75 2.8XR Di- $289
85mm f/1.8 w/hood- $375
Extra NP-E3- $125
E1 handstrap- $21
Oakley Thumps for while I'm shooting- $65

Total- Technically, $4055."

So he hasn't updated his gearlist for 48 hours or so and we are clueless really. I wanna be up to the minute before figuring the odds.

blonde

wouldn't it be cool if we had a function to be notified by email every time his gear list changes (of course that would mean that we will all need to upgrade our email accounts to at least 10gb of storage..)

A TAMRON? A Canon EF 24-70/2.8 owner downgrades to a TAMRON?

Someone get the medics quick...

Permagrin and I were remarking about the nature of the universe, equilibrium, equality, and Dante's return to the 1DsM2, and yet how despite that, the forum did not quite seem 'right'.

It seems that the Tamron may yield some insight into the nature of this disturbance in the Force..... ;) the only thing more disturbing would be say, his crossgrade to the 24-105 ISL. Or, ME buying a Tamron. Now that would really throw me for a loop.

I'll tell you right now...the Tamron isn't staying. It's just all I can afford at the moment. We'll see how she works, though.

As for the MKIIN, I'm hoping I really like it. Who knows, though. I'm sure I'll be selling it someday...it's just my nature. I think I'm gonna really like it, though. I was excited about getting my 1DMkII back when, and it was alright, but I was very disappointed in the ISO performance...it seemed worse than the 20D/30D, which I thought was surprising. I also disliked going back to that teeny screen. Just didn't feel right. The MKIIN has a lot of the things I've long since wanted in a camera. We'll see how long it "wows" me. This is the body I've wanted all along, so I imagine I'll really like it. I couldn't afford it, though. Look at it this way...there's nothing to move up to. Should be the end of body switching.

The 12th 24-70L will come to me, though.

Just like DHL to mess up our little betting thing. :( Sorry, Ronald. I know you were hoping to play all weekend. As for me, you know I think you're crazy to give up your 24-70 so soon. It would rock on the 1DMKIIN. I've been using my 5D with that lens and all my shots are amazing. I find it my dream set up right now, so not switching for a while.

I can't bet, it's not in my nature, but I assume you will like the new camera, but in a little while, get tired of it and want something new. If Canon brings out something interesting this spring, I see Ronald having a good time trying to get it. The next great adventure. :)

I know it, Suzy. Good news is, the guy that traded with me called up DHL the second I told him, and made a real stink about it (as he should have). They said although they can't pinpoint where the package is, as it's between checkpoints, they'll try and get it delivered tomorrow.

I didn't want to give up my 24-70, but rest assured, I'll have another fairly soon. The combo is heavy as sin, though. I remember it on my 1DMkII. Truly a "task" to lift it to your eye. My mother tried, and pretty much couldn't. I don't mind it much, though. If it gives me the advantages it does, it's worth it. Oddly enough, though, with an E1 on, it couldn't be more comfortable, literally dangling by my fingertips.

I don't see myself getting something else as early as spring, though...N isn't old enough, is it? The 1DsMkII should have a successor in the spring, but I don't think the N will. Either way, it'll be out of my budget, I imagine.

I think I'll do well for a while with this. Other than having to upgrade the 28-75, I'm done for the time being. God I was so anxious to get the N, though. I stood outside from 2-4 (it was to be delivered by 4) with my thin jacket and my thumps on, and just waited for that yellow van.

At one time I felt there was still some hope for Ronald. When he got the 400 f/5.6, then I thought "good, he'll have to get his butty out of the house now and possibly get himself a bird, hopefully in more ways than one." Well, it was not meant to be.

Today, it is rather evident that Ronald does not really own most of his listed gear items, whatever that may be from a day to another. Rather, he gives those lenses and cameras a temporary shelter. Caught in a never ending recycling game, the situation appears as some sorta recreational strategy of creative self-inflicted suffering. As a practicioner of such, Ronald transcends Canondyke for sure.

I'd say there is only one possible happy outcome of this photogear merrygoround of Waverly: Ronald gets a job with the B&H Used Department, probably Shipping & Receiving detail.

LOL guy you are nuts but I will pay all my credit cards off and buy it from you when you are ready to sell. But please wait until at least March for me to get things in order.

Seriously though guy I hope this Camera lasts you longer then any of your others. DO NOT SELL IT! Keep if for years and absolutely wear it out. If you hold on to it for 30 months, that is like $100 per month. Not bad at all if you look at it long term. Best of luck.

Decided to actually come through with my promise to the boys to bake so a chocolate caramel toffee cake is right now cooling down in my kitchen I decide to visit my friends on POTN and find that we are now betting on when Ron will sell gear he doesn't even have yet?...

I would completely bet but I don't keep good track of Ron's spending.. There were even a few 24-70 L's that I missed completely so i'm just not in a position to determine when he'll sell off his newest body... But, I can always hazard a guess as to what his next camera will be.... I say 5D.. Understand the part about the interim 28-75 though.Sure that equals about 1 24-70 L every month he has been at POTN. In only like 15 months he's gone from a Rebel XT to a Canon 1D MKII with about 9 other bodies in between.

How do you do it Ronald? I can't swing deals like that even if I wanted to but I sure want a 1D MKII N.

The 1DsMkII is so totally not worth the money to me. It's a 1DMKII with FF and half the frame rate. I'd pay no more for it than I would the N, and I don't think it's worth any more. It just seems really outdated, and reading Canon's page on it felt like reading about the 10D...it needs a successor. It's getting to the point where it costs way more than its worth. To anyone..I'd think.

As far as I'm concerned, the only thing that'd be an upgrade right now from a MKIIN would be like an HD39 or similar. The 1DsMKII just seems...idk...like a ripoff.

Sounds like my 350D and 17-85. You never forget your first SLR.Nah my first SLR was was a Canon Rebel G, the first one. I bought it used for a steal :) only $350 bucks! And it sucked, it had a plastic mount, slower the slow AF and best of all my favorite of Canon cameras big giant Lithium batteries that were hard to find and cost $22 each and were good for like 300 pictures.

The 1DsMkII is so totally not worth the money to me. It's a 1DMKII with FF and half the frame rate. I'd pay no more for it than I would the N, and I don't think it's worth any more. The 1DsMKII just seems...idk...like a ripoff.Well don't worry I bet 2007 will see a more affordable 2Ds MKI, with same amount of MP as the 1Ds MKII but everything else as fast as their current fastest dSLR. Then there is always Hasselblad, Mamyia or maybe even Leica for you ;)

Personally if I could afford it, or got stupid one night with Credit Cards I would totally buy either a 1D MKII, 1D MKII N or either 1Ds cameras. But something about spending 1 months pay on a camera does not seem worth it to me.

Just judging by the results, grego..that's all. I remember using a 1DMKII taking shots of my niece in July when she was born, using the 100 2.8 macro. The shots were sharp enough, and my exposure was decent, but I'll be darned if those weren't some of the most grainy shots I'd seen. ISO 1600 was used. I used 1600 on my 5D quite an awful lot, and it was pleasant, to say the least. There was noise...but it was minimal.

That does seem odd considering the sensors are the same. All the changes were fairly small with bigger buffer, ability to save formats to 2 diff cards, the screen, pic styles.

I really haven't compared my 30D and 1DMKII, but im sure the diff won't be too diff. I haven't really seen anything to complain about noisewise. Could be your settings, as the 1D does have NR you can turn on or off in the custom functions, or maybe your camera was faulty.

Of course 5D is in another world though.

As for the 1D series, i thought one of your complaints was weight(one of the pros for the 5D, weighing lenss), even though you said it feels good.

Aren't you still waiting for your lens that you ordered somewhere around last Aug? If you order yourself a 1DMkIIN now, you might get it by next year sometime and have your credit card all paid off by the time it arrives ;)Nope I bought a lens from a guy who conned me and sent me a barely working 300mm f4 IS L back in August. Had it for about 3 weeks and then sent it into Canon where it has been ever since. If the lens wasn't so sharp I would have probably dumped it but when I get it back it literally will be better then a brand new 300 because the parts will be all brand new. They better be since I am shelling out $400 to have the freaking thing fixed.

Still waiting for my 24-70 L though, its been I think 15 days now and I am going nuts!

Yeah, no use trying to convince me of anything. It's my money, and my mind's made up. ;-)

I'll say that I'm noticing the noise difference between it and the 5D, but I don't mind the white speckles as much, even if there's more of it. One thing that I experienced again tonight, that I did with the 1DMKII and didn't care for was that I thought it was overly difficult to use CF 4-1. The button on the back seems harder to press, and hurts my thumb after a bit. That's the only annoyance so far. Oh, that, and the fact that the jpeg on the SD card isn't erased when I erase the RAW on the CF. I think they should both be erased.

If you've got it and you are happy, that is the main thing...

For me the primary appeal of the 5D lies in the fact I need a true 17mm ultrawide for some of the things I do, and I don't like too much weight. Other than that I would gladly adopt the N... and I did.. just that it's a 1Dinosaur, not an N ;)

Ronald S. Jr.

Whatever gets the job done. 5D is just plain lovely. I just realized that I like length more than I like width in lenses. I also realized that "I wanna go fast, I wanna go fast", so it just made sense. I'm looking to get some longer lenses, and I want a camera that'll push them to their potential.

When it comes to low iight Ron...my mk2n can't hold a candle to my 20D...but then again...low light isn't why I own a mk2n...and as far as erasing the memory cards goes...the set up is perfect...no chance to make a stupid mistake and accidentally erase the card you didn't intend to erase...might take some getting used to...but wouldn't want it to work any other way.

For tele and action photogs there is probably no other camera that does better. My 1D fills those roles superbly.. one can only imagine the N takes a good thing and makes it better.

20D better than MkIIN? That's pretty bass ackwards, if you ask me. I just used the N already for a theater performance tonight, and I'll say it did damn well. I've already gone through the shots, too. Looks good to me. Here's a shot from tonight, which would have to be ISO 1250 or higher (only because I never went below that).

I'll tell you what I am unhappy with, though. Look at the nightmare CA from the 85 1.8 at f/2.

Ahh, ok.. I thought the newer generation CMOS sensors would have been a substantial improvement over my 1Dinosaur's CCD. Then again, like you, I keep the 5D for low light work....that camera is nearly untouchable at high ISO.

The MKII does have NR as an option to use.
From those two images, its hard to say, because with lighting outside, generally its not completely even.

But even then, the 1D series generally gives more detail at the scarifice of more noise. So it makes sense recalling that aspect.

Time to someday go run some tests!! Well after it rains.

No NR on either image. If you look at the background of the 20D image...you can see some fine grain noise...if you look at similar areas of the mk2n image, you will notice giant gobs of noise on the buildings.

Correct, sir. I never said it was straight body for body, sometimes I traded a body and a lens, or what not, but never did I spend any amount of money upgrading. I wait for exceptional deals that are too good to pass up, and I sweet talk my way into a trade/sale that's undoubtedly in my favor. As I said before, my mom's dell account bought my first set of gear. This consisted of:

XT
grip
2 580's
8gigs of Ultra II's
bogen 3001 with 3265
50 1.4
100 2.8 macro
100-400L
kit lens
28-135 IS

Then she bought elsewhere (not available at Dell):
light stands/brackets/umbrellas
ST-E2
backdrops
70-200L IS
35L (a few months later)
XPS desktop
Custom Bracket

Now...as you can see, this would add up to quite some money. Anyway, leaving out the middle, these things have been traded, sold, and so on, and I've ended up with what you see in my signature, without spending any amount of money whatsoever. I'll add that contrary to what some have said, I do have each and every thing below in my physical posession. None "in the mail" or what not. I will also add that my 580, 70-200L IS, 35L, Ultra II's, and XPS have never left my posession.

The end.

P.S. The Sigma 20 1.8 is actually my father's, but he doesn't care for it, so it's assumed its position on my shelf.

Well, Snir mah bo', like it or not, it is simply very helpful to have well to do relatives and family members who are sympathetic to our collecting needs.
For example, Aerosmith and I are both kept men......not having spent a penny of our own money, the generosity of our wives has helped us acquire a half-decent gear collection. As a further example, you might remember that Calicocat got both the 300 f/2.8 and the 400 f/5.6 as birthday presents.

Granted, some collectors have had to work very hard for their gear. Belmondo is such an example. I understand he spent much of his working career toiling on American railroad tracks.

I don't feel the need to defend myself from a bunch of strangers, but I'll just say that I didn't mean it was in the same class as the 10D. It just felt like, reading the product page, that I was reading about a "previous" model, where you think "yeah I'm glad they improved that, I remember that's how it used to be". It just doesn't seem like it has an awful lot more going for it than the N to make it so much more. More, yes, but not $4k more. I'd like to understand what the big differences are between it and the N, other than full frame sensor. Not being sarcastic..I'd really like to know.

Quite the sarcastic bunch, you guys are.

I beg your pardon. We are NOT a bunch of strangers. We are family.

So there.:p

So Belmondo, since the 1dsmkii is outdated, are you going to sell it to me for a good price. I know you promised me whenever that day came!!

double the MP, FF sensor, which applies to AOV, FOV, DOF fall off and actually DOF characteristics of the lenses used. To a creative photographer, there are serious critical things. No need to defend yourself, just asking what you meant.

Think some one got up on the wrong side of the bed and ripped his horsie pajama's :)

afraid so... especially because you bought a 1DmkII which is even worse than the 1DsmkII (how the hell can you live with that horrible noise levels, smaller buffer and the crappy lcd??!?!? ;) )

Ronald needs his own forum to give us all advice about buying gear, I would never have a 1DsMII if I knew all this

Besides the "noise" of the 1Ds is probably non existance when you look at the 16mp image at 50% (8mp size of the 1D MKII N) the noise only comes out at 100% and who in Gods green earth would want a 16mp picture at 100% anyways? Not many I think.

Oh, man. Now I have to sell off all my stuff. Turns out my 1Dsm2 is just so much junk. Who knew?

Guess I'll go by Sony. They're always cutting edge.I'll give you my advanced 20D for that useless 1Ds MKII that is old like a 10D. We got a deal buddy?

he does have his own forum, it's called the buy & sell forum...Hahahaha lol no he has two, FM buy/sell and POTN's.

Okay, Ronald has become very quiet. He probably thinks we're all picking on him, and he's off in a corner somewhere doing a slow burn. At this point, I think we should all take this opportunity to tell Ronald how much we really love him.

Ronald, I lo....

Nope. Can't do it.

Ronald. You're family. That's all I can bring myself to say.

5:42PM, still no UPS, although their tracking info says "Out for Delivery." I've been through this enough times that I'm not concerned. It wil come, or it won't. Either way, I'll sleep well tonight.

Well, I have no shame. I love you, Ronnie. :) Life in the forum wouldn't be the same without you. I would not have any fun. And I wanted to know how you are doing with your new 1DMKIIN?

Oh it's fine. I did a girl's senior pictures today with the N and the 28-75, and compared to the 85 1.8 (on the N), I'm supremely dissatisfied with the performance of the Tammy. Truly pathetic. God I hope I can get a 24-70L back soon. Geeez.

Ron, I'm not a betting person, but I will guess you will be getting another 24-70 soon. I don't know how you part with it. :)
