Look at this, the Canon Powershot Pro 1, an 8 MP compact digicam: http://digitalstar.com/Canonstuff/?Album=Pro1+G8
another link: http://www.pbase.com/nero_design/powershotpro1
and more: http://zetterstrand.com/canona80/canon_powershot_pro_1.htm
Has this camera been officially announced by Canon already? There's nothing about it on http://www.powershot.com but it looks real.

This camera was one of a handful announced today at PMA by Canon.

That Pro1 actually has a 28-200mm f2.4/3.5 "L" lens on it!
My gawd!
If such a lens was sold alone, it would cost way more than that camera wouldnt it?
"And this lens called L lens employs one fluorite and one Ultra Low-Dispersion (UD) lens in a configuration that significantly reduces the residual color aberration. The aspherical lenses are used to achieve optimal aberration compensation over the full zoom range."

No, because amount of glass is about 30% of what would be needed for similar EOS lense (due to size), and the connection system is direct.
As this camera is not EOS, maybe we would need to think a place in forums for these new models?

I understand that they might be using some technologies associated with L lenses however I am sure that the build quality and the actual performance are far from the NEW 28-200L just annouced. That camera is smaller that the g3 from what I can tell.
Awesome camera though. I might have a new backup.
I guess we can assume that the 10d will be replaced by an 8mp version in the fall. So sad, for my checking account that is.

Hey ijohnson,
Where did you see info on a 28-200L? EOS mount?

I wonder how the depth of field will be with this camera compared to an SLR?
I forget, why exactly do digital point-and-shoot cameras have such wide depth of field compared to SLR's?
Is it because of their small sensor size?

There is a topic about the new canon stuff. The lens looks pretty nice. I have no idea about pricing. Nice white lens with a hell of a zoom range. I can't wait ot hear someone review it so that I can make myself buy one.

If I had to guess, and I would guarantee this is a bad guess, it is because they have even smaller sensors than the 10D. They might have a 2.5 crop factor which makes an adequate DOF impossible. In addition, I feel sure that the ISO performance on the new Pro1 is as bad an any CCD cam.
It is not as if anyone here would replace their 10D with this, however you might want to replace your g2. You might also have a tougher time deciding between a 300D and a Pro1.

Still looking for a Canon EF 12-1600 F 1.2L for $400.
I have two and I'll be happy to sell one of them for $10, £10 or 10 Euros. I must point out that - since I clearly reside in an alternate dimension - shipping will cost far, far more than there is currency in the universe.

Are you guys talking aobut two different lenses here? THe 28-200L is the fixed lens on the Pro1. The "white lens withe a hell of a zoom range" is the 28-300L which is an EF lens and has nothing to do with the Pro1.

Yes, we are talking about two different lenses. If you put the 28-300 in that camera it would quadruple the weight. THough I am sure that it would be one hell of camera.

P.S. Do I say hell too much?

I just wonder what about noise? same problem like the Sony F828?
Just thinking, because the senser is much smaller as from an DSLR, it will produce more noise! Hope that canon learned from the mistake of sony!

The Powershot Pro 1 and S1 IS discussion probably belongs in the Powershot G-series forum...

Is it because of their small sensor size?
To what I understand, depth of field is a function of:
- amount of light (i.e. aperture)
- subject distance from lens
- lens distance forming the image on sensor (focal length).
(In fact, a pinhole camera came to my mind.)
And the small sensor is the reason for large depth of field. A lens with smaller focal length for a digicam, say 7mm lens, behave as a 50mm SLR in same kind of angle of view. And the depth of field for 7mm vs 50mm lens are certainly different if other factors remain the same.

Pekka,
I think this camera can be included in G series forum and rename it "Canon Prosumer Digital Camera Forum".

The Pro series really should have their own forum. It is a unique camera with different features and accessories. At least for the time being, there should be a forum devoted to these fine cameras.

... you shouldn't have done away with the Pro 90 Forum just so quickly :)
Might be a great home for the Pro1 now.

Andy
