well ministry was a really good gig but a nightmare to shoot. Part of the set was hughe wire mesh fances that the band were standing behind for most of the gig. The light was being shone on the mesh making it really difficult to shoot the band :(

I hear you about brutal conditions in shooting, Burrelly. I have a 2-day shoot with Dark Star Orchestra last night and tonight. Lighting is all over the place and although there is a photo pit, they don't want it used. So, I'm moving all over the place trying to get shooting lanes while dancing with the hippie-girls. Getting some, but man-oh-man it's not so easy.

I shoot a lot from the soundboard for Bruce Springsteen and I see you have a 1.6 crop body, so I will recommend that you go with the f/2.8 300mm L. not the 400. The 300 is my favorite lens, so sharp that it makes pixels bleed (PP task to clean up) and is considerably lighter than the 400mm. This allows me to hand hold it all night rather than use a monopod. It's a small point but the hand holding has allowed me to get shots that others can't because of the monopod.

I just wonder if you realize their agreement means that you sign over ALL your copyrights by signing their "Nasty Little Contract".

We just laughed when we got that contract. Basically THEY own the pics YOU take just for a free ticket and a photo pass.

i've not seen the contract yet; i shot Spoon (another nlm client) last year and didn't have to sign anything. we'll see what comes. why would a PR firm set policy for an artist? typically the rights-grabbing i've heard about has been band/management specific (QotSA, foo fighters, etc).

PR Firms work for the bands. I'm going by experience dealing with NLM. We always get that same agreement for any band we rqst for. I know others who run into the same issue with this firm.

I think their photo contract is the same across the board for all the bands they(NLM) represent.

Hey, you could get lucky and maybe they won't have it.

Or try drawing a line with black sharpie through the parts of the agreement you don't agree with? Maybe they won't say anything. ;);)

I don't ever sign a all rights release. I've done business with major labels, and I've black lined parts of their contract if I felt there was something I didn't agree to.

The good thing about little ole' NZ, not many venues worry about it, but there was no photo pit. I Had no trouble taking my 400d and 2 lenses in... I need to be more ruthless in getting a decent spot to shoot from though.

I had real problems avoiding mike stands, they were every where.

i've not seen the contract yet; i shot Spoon (another nlm client) last year and didn't have to sign anything. we'll see what comes. why would a PR firm set policy for an artist? typically the rights-grabbing i've heard about has been band/management specific (QotSA, foo fighters, etc).
I went right through the label for QotSA and there wasn't even a contract to sign. I've only been shooting shows for a little over a year but the only one I've been asked to sign anything for has been Cheap Trick/Heart/Journey. Typically I go through PR but I find labels easier to deal with most of the time.

Twisted Sister, Opeth, Kamelot, My Dying Bride, White Lion, Hanoi Rocks,
The Wildhearts, Trouble and Richie Kotzen among others.

I'm kinda the "official festival photographer", since I'm also doing all their

There's no restrictions or silly contracts, as far as I know, so this should be fun! :D

Tonight is Fleet Foxes and Wilco at Red Butte Gardens.

Busy line up.. tomorrow night a band shoot for Dearga, the musicians behind Irish music & dance show Dancing Thru The Ages (a Riverdance type show - and very good!), Wed or Thu shooting Dancing Thru The Ages show itself, Fri is Maximo Park, then Sat & Sun I'm on the fotog team for the Festival of World Cultures, a huge annual event up Dublin way with lots of stage acts. Then away for a week & a bit and straight back into an 'East meets West' type bellydance/flamenco dance show. And these days I'm working till 7pm so it's tight on the time ;)

I just wonder if you realize their agreement means that you sign over ALL your copyrights by signing their "Nasty Little Contract".

We just laughed when we got that contract. Basically THEY own the pics YOU take just for a free ticket and a photo pass.

I had a huge weekend shooting, private vip event on Thursday, Friday a large family photo shoot at a lake house mansion, Saturday a Marathon, Sunday another family photo shoot. This week I am shooting a homeless program for the newspaper a political candidate and nothing actually scheduled for this weekend (yet).

i can't figure it out...i already had my ticket (my wife really wanted to go to this, so i got one as well), and there's no photo pit in the club...could the management agency really want to turn down free publicity? i guess the answer is yes.

on the plus side, i did get a confirmation for Mogwai in a few weeks' time.
