Got an email today (Tuesday), from a band I shot two years ago, and they want me to get them again, this Friday... Waiting for credentials and pass... If all goes well, I'll post some pics next week.

NOTE: Got the verification email letter from the head of the band today (Wednesday)... He notified the venue too... However, I haven't gotten a verification letter from the venue... It might be the venue Director's day off, as they have shows, tomorrow (Thursday), Friday and Saturday. Irregardless, I'm printing out the emails and showing up early at the venue on Friday... It's just 10 minutes from my house.

2nd NOTE: Got the verification from the Venue this Thursday afternoon... But there are no official photo passes to be given out... Will be wearing a *Band Crew* laminated tag from the band instead.

Tonight has been the worst night ever I guess... No photos at all of the last band, and my 20D broke after a fall from my bag just after the show. Glad it wasn't my 1D2, but it sucks anyways.

Tonight has been the worst night ever I guess... No photos at all of the last band, and my 20D broke after a fall from my bag just after the show. Glad it wasn't my 1D2, but it sucks anyways.
It does suck. I had a photoshoot today in my studio. Just before the model arrived the battery brick for my laptop, that I have a 30" monitor for mounted on a pivot arm on the wall, died so I couldn't use the laptop since it won't drive the 30" without direct AC power to the laptop. Then I went out to get some Spa rocks (it was a Spa Lifestyle shoot) and backed into a little Honda civic with my huge Chevy Silverado pickup truck in the parking lot because it was so short I didnt' see it, sigh. Then a friend of our model had to eject from a jet fighter due to engine flameout and was not found in the ocean for five hours ... but the pilot was killed ... all while we were shooting (I know nothing more so don't ask.) Not a really good day all around. But, I don't mean to minimize your loss, Anouk, and I hope you can get your 20D repaired. I gave my 20D to my son ... I'm sure he'd share with you! :-)

I've sent an e-mail to the repair center about my 20D, 85 F1.8, 28-70L and 24-70 Sigma. We'll see...

Nope Narlus, just my 85mm did. Need to test it, I think it's backfocusing after the fall so I'll test that today or tomorrow and will then decide if I send it with the 20D or not. The lens hood of the 85 has been cracked, but I can fix that myself. 85mm itself seems to be okay further.

I've got a 24-70 siggie which hasn't been used in probably 1.5 to 2 years now, broken during a gig too. Focus and zoom stuck. Fix will be paid by insurance of the venue since I was photographing for them when it happened.

And my 28-70 is doing it's job allright but there came out a little screw a few months ago, and after that another one got loose but that one is still inside of the lens. Lens has got some movement between front and back part, and sometimes the AF gets stuck. So maybe it would be a good idea to send that one for a repair aswell ;)

it was a difficult shoot for me, since the venue is rather small and has no photo pit...doors were supposed to be @ 8 but got pushed back to 8:30, so there were more people @ 8:30 than usual, and i wasn't on the list...the tour manager had left for the hotel, and i ended up having to find one of the people @ the merch table to add me to the list. by the time i got through the doors, it was ~3 people deep at the stage, and i'm rather short. i ended up using Live View for a lot of the photos...haven't checked 'em out yet, actually just downloading them off the cards now.

When I shot them last year it was an extremely challenging shoot - the lighting was very dim with Anton off to the left of stage, no pit (but got there early for a good position) but I had to contend with abusive arseholes who abused both me and my girlfriend and were deliberately obstructing me by blocking my lens with their hands and a t shirt. There wasn't room to move away so I did my best. When I was packing my gear into my bag to move back one of the above mentioned arseholes said "Good the old c*nt with the camera is going" I'd had enough so he copped a pretty nice right jab to the chin. That shut him up.

I have a question for you guys, if you are not shooting for the press how do you guys go about getting into these shows? the only way i have got any kind of access to any sizable show is by having press passes. just wondering if this is a know someone type deal, the first question they ask me is if i am with the press and if i say no I have been told press only photographers are being let in. just curious what you guys process is.

I contact the band's management or publicist, whatever contact info I can find. I've had good luck with this for fairly big bands (Shinedown, Mudvayne, As I Lay Dying, Hinder, Theory of a Deadman).

Most of the others on here are either media or shoot for the venues.

There is a reason they are called press passes. I shoot for publications and agencies - sometimes I am knocked back by some acts as they have a no agency policy. I have worked hard to develop a good reputation with publicists and promoters - this takes time and can be helpful but it doesn't guarantee access.

Sometimes you'll get lucky if you aren't shooting for media and be allowed to shoot but that's going to be rare.

Photo passes are generally tightly limited for a number of reasons so unless you as a photographer are providing something of value to the publicist/promoter/band/venue it's unlikely that you will get a pass.

If it was as easy as saying "hey I'm a photographer and I want a pass to shoot joe blow" can you imagine how many "photographers" there would be shooting a show?

I actually forgot to consider options... It's mainly a time constraint... I was just asked this afternoon to do a church shoot this Sunday... I thought it would be a good idea to have a second lens handy...

The price of the 50D was OK, and I didn't have time to look for a used 5D...

I actually ordered the 50D from New York Camera and Video, out of Southampton, PA... They shipped it out this afternoon, and I'll get it tomorrow morning... My local friend's immediate relative owns the business... they took care of me right away.

Just last month, I got the 10-22mm EFS, and it doesn't fit the 5D... So the FF will have to wait...

Added Note: I also had to consider an affordable alternative... Last week, I purchased a pretty good 17" laptop computer (will be ready in June), and an expensive carbon fiber tripod...

Since so many are subscribed to this thread I am going to break the rules and report here that the fires in Santa Barbara are truly horrific and devastating ... and we have already had two previous huge fires ("Gap" and "Tea" ... fires get names here) in the past year. The hillsides have 30-40 years of accumulated fuel ... in some ways it is like living in a dry forest ... we are technically a desert even though right on the ocean.

Fortunately, while I work in the fire area at the University, I live 35 miles away and am quite safe. I decided not to take pictures of this fire as I am very busy and every GWC is getting great shots, but it is stunning.

Scabies was slagged verbally on stage a few times, he'll never play w/ them again. stu cooke on bass was tight, couldn't see the drummer well but he was fine, and Monty Oxymoron on keys was hilarious, in a good way.

I always have my 300mm f/2.8 ... although I couldn't use it at the Joe Cocker concert last night as they made me get right up belly to the stage as though there was a pit, which there isn't! I have a 400mm f/2.8, which is what I think that bald brute is hand holding, but it's too big for me to do that. Anouk, I thought you were a redhead? And I'm still waiting for you to contribute to the 'Self Portrait' thread. :-)
