Possibly, but last time I was there (the only time with a barricade) they wouldn't let me shoot from within it! I'm not sure what the barricade was for, but not photographers. I think you can shoot from anywhere there as long as you have a pass. I've used my pass in the past to get up to the 2nd and 3rd floors and shoot from there during the first three songs also and the security folks didn't give me any problems.

it really depends on the act...i've shot there 8 times, and only two times was i also able to shoot from the house (1st was George Clinton, and it was only their 2nd week or so of being open so i tihnk they were still ironing things out; 2nd was the first time i shot Mastodon, but we could only do that for the opening bands). for Morrissey, they made me check my gear (which i had to pay for at coat check!).
what shows did you see w/o a barricade?
i used my pass to get me to the 2nd and 3rd levels for Mastodon's most recent show last week but got shut down up on the 3rd floor.

I think I've only shot 3 times there - The Neville Brothers, Toots and the Maytals, and Al Green. Al Green had the barricade but it was very close to the stage and they made photographers (I think I was the only one) shoot from outside it. The other two shows didn't have a barricade.

Hmmm, if there are barriers at Atak they never are for the photographers, but that's never the reason for placing them anyways. Reason for placing them always is enlarging the distance between band and audience. If you CAN take photos in between the barriers and the stage that's nice, but they didn't place them for you as a photographer.

so could you shoot the whole show?
there's been a barricade for every show i've been to, but i guess over half have been metal or otherwise rambunctious shows.
HoB really does seem to have fluid rules; i asked about shooting the whole show for the Dethklok/Mastodon/Converge/High on Fire date but Dethklok's stage manager said since it was sold out, no shooting from outside the barricade.

Saturday = AFMXA (Amateur Freestyle Motocross Association) Competition and awards ceremony. Several guys from Metal Mulisha will be there doing a demo and signing stuff. Like Deegan, Twitch, Faisst, Potter and some others.
Sunday = Interview and photo shoot with new Freestyle Motocross Team FSU. The interview was arranged over a month ago, and was supposed to be me and a couple-three riders taking pictures and talking. It's a new team and the team owner apparently saw this as a real opportunity. I got the list of attendees 2 days ago, and it's turned in to this:
4-6 team riders
3 models
2 promoters
2 sponsors
2 rap bands (friends of theirs, including Chucky Chuck)
Oh, and Todd Potter (Metal Mulisha), also a friend.

I have heard that TMV release is in operation in Australia. I am shooting for an agency and the promoter so there is no way I can possibly sign it.
Cheap Trick wouldn't allow photographers at all when they last toured here (with Def Leppard).

As I'm shooting for an agency it's impossible to sign/honour that type of "agreement".

Dates are starting to just roll in now. I did the Norma Jean show in December, I have Shadows Fall on 2/4, the manager of 2 Skinnee J's sent me an e-mail yesterday asking if I was still interested in shooting and that he could get me a pass for the show on 2/13, and I sent off an e-mail to see about shooting A Day to Remember on 4/6 which would be awesome because August Burns Red opens for them and despite the personal connections I have, I haven't been able to shoot them in the past two years.
I also had a maybe from The Drop Kick Murphys. Management said to call them back two weeks before the show. That would be an awesome event.

The Mars Volta is the same onerous release (much like Them Thieving Vultures).
It was emailed to me today by the publicist along with permission to shoot them on Monday.
I just sent this email back in response; it will be interesting to see what happens, especially as the promoter has asked the publicist to allow me to shoot any shows I put in for.
Dear xxx,
I’ve just had a read of The Mars Volta release and there is no way I can agree to sign it for two reasons:
I am shooting for an agency so I cannot guarantee limiting use to one publication (as spelled out in section 1)
And
I cannot transfer rights to the images to the band (section 2)
I hope you understand. I’d love to cover The Mars Volta but I can’t agree to that release.
If the release can be waived please let me know otherwise I will be unable to photograph the show. My apologies if this has caused you any inconvenience.

Excellent, Richard! I will 'fess up here and admit that I will sign whatever agreement is presented to me at the casino that allows me to fulfill my obligations to the casino to photograph the performers, although I have been known to 'strike out and initial' ... they don't seem to notice. Of 40 or more concerts a year, there is generally only one or two that require a release. Since 99% of my income is from the casino this is not particularly onerous.

The publicist handling The Mars Volta got back to me (I also spoke to her today on another matter and she was really apologetic about it). This is her reply.
I totally understand that is why I attached it, to give photographers the heads up about the release. I had photographers in Sydney refuse to sign the release and for obvious reasons. This release is specific only to The Mars Volta and I’m not sure if there is much room for movement on it.
This is definitely a shame though as I know the Big Day Out team were eager for you to shoot as many shows as possible.
I’ll let you know if anything changes.
Cheers,

Too bad, Richard. I was really hoping that Nasty Little Man might budge a bit and loosen it up a tad. Unfortunately, at a festival, there will be a few photographers that will sign it and TMV will get some coverage. It seem obvious that even the area publicist isn't very happy with the word she has to put out. The good thing is that you will have a number of other bands to shoot and they will have more publicity. Perhaps you can work on getting extra access for one, or more, of the other bands. TMV's loss, other bands gain.

I'm shooting them at The Big Day Out tomorrow (no release for that). The release was for their sideshow tonight.
I'm sitting here contemplating the Big Day Out tomorrow and there isn't anything I'm genuinely excited about from a musical standpoint. There are some I'm looking forward to photograph and others I like but I'd rather see them in an environment other than the Big Day Out.
FWIW my list of bands to photograph tomorrow reads:
Karnivool
Tame Impala
Mastodon
Magic Dirt
Kasabian
The Temper Trap
The Decemberists
Wagons
Hilltop Hoods
Dizzee Rascal
Dan Sultan
Rise Against
Lily Allen
Jet
The Mars Volta
Ladyhawke
Tumbleweed
Grinspoon
Powderfinger
Peaches
Muse
Fear Factory
Groove Armada

I find that approaching festivals it's important to keep an open mind and usually there is one, or more, act(s) that surprise me and I end up liking. I'm glad that you can shoot at TMV at BDO but don't be surprised if they spring the release at you at the last second. At Bonnaroo a PR rep was there to review the releases and make sure nobody who didn't sign it got in for the set...including some of the very top concert photographers in the business. That might not happen because they are out of the US, where Nasty Little Man is based.

The publicist here is someone decent to work with and took a very professional approach. I did actually contemplate modifying the release as it was a Word document and putting in a few clauses/terms of my own. I wonder how that would stack up legally...
The release won't be coming out tomorrow.

You could take just one good photo and about 500 absolute crap ones.
the release is only good for 2 songs, and House of Blues does not typically allow shooting from outside the barricade.
i think i'm gonna pass on this one.

I am saddened to hear about all these issues for shooting by others. As I've said before, I don't feel that I have an option when it comes to signing releases as the casino pays me very well week after week, although anything that says someone else owns the pictures can't be signed without modification because I am shooting for the casino.
Anyway, I am shooting Sugar Ray on Thursday.

Oh, yes, I know! I think you did the right thing! I wish we were all in a position to do that as was appropriate and then they'd stop all this shooting rules and releases crap and allow us to do our jobs properly, sigh. My comment was in complete support of your position.

You guys are killing me! LOL. I shot Johnny Mathis last night and got attacked by his sound guy because my camera was too loud (cursing and fuming) ... he was right and I was an insensitive clod but I just don't think about it since it is only an issue one concert a year at most. I was and will continue to be more circumspect in the future. Damn, I hate it when someone is critical of me and they are right. It shouldn't be a problem for Ron White next week.

LOL ... the perfect come back! Probably because I have too many choices? I now own (and intend to keep into the foreseeable future) 5DMII, 1DsMIII, 1DMIII x 2 and 1DMIV. Unlike many, I prefer my 1D's to the 5D for work but like the lightness of the 5DMII for a walkaround body. Truth to tell, I expect it was the three frame bursts that locked up his blood pressure.

i saw Janes a couple of times in the early 90s, they always put on a good show (regardless of how navarro and farrell are irritating off the stage). i've not seen EoDM; they are QoTSA related, right?
